From the description of the "mystery wires" and what Doghead posted with the Civvy wiring diagram, I believe that this "new" diagram is what is happening with the early versions of the CUCV. Possibly a hold over from the civvy trucks.

Of course YMMV as I have not personally looked at an early wiring harness.

Looks like the Early 1983 trucks have the neutral safety switch. Other trucks have the switch bypassed and the yellow wire is directly connected to the purple/white wire.
