Murphy makes all incredibly-mysterious nonsensical things possible ! .. Had a similar situation with a Roosa-Master injection pump on a big ol' Deere , but in reverse... I tipped the decapitated IP upside down to service the shaft seal and voila! , a little pin magically appeared on the bench ! .. The manual's cutaway illustration did not show the existence of this pin, which apparently belonged inside one of the tiny deep passages, a situation which led to a couple age-old questions that included words such as "wtf" and others .., I bet you spat just a few while working on the M62 .. :hammer: :-x

I could never put myself through your amount of suffering at my age, therefore my M62 is gonna keep most it's small and annoying "Deficiencies & Shortcomings" as long as i own it, except maybe new paint someday . .Yes, it does have a DA Form 2404 in the glovebox which seems to add line items almost as fast as other items are corrected

He does have quite the vocabulary. Would probably make a pirate blush.
Did I mention he likes to throw stuff.
I may be guilty of poking a few buttons and maybe laughing at the wrong time. But it's just to get him to relax and take a breath.
Most of the stuff at the museum has been neglected for years. It will take time to bring it back to life.
The fact that he is willing to keep chipping away at it at his age by himself is inspiring.
Most people take up crossword puzzles.

Did some goofy easy stuff on the beast tis week. Fixed a non op low beam, bulb just NFG. Attempted to get the turn signals operating. Had no light on the stalk, so I figured i'd start there since I have had multiple T.S. stalks be the issue of no turn signals or flashers. Found a pushed back pin in the connector. It is the power in wire. Tried to pull it out, push it in, no go. The wiring is so old and brittle I decided to just tie the harness back under the dash and leave it alone. We don't need flashers or signals where we are going!

Decided to put some lipstick on it, came out OK. I forgot how much I like to make stencils!

Seems like yesterday you tagged mine. I've left it cause it sort of fits the stupid horn.
Hopefully you lost the F.A.G stencil.
The looks on all the faces of all the guys at camp dirt bag back in the day when they looked to find they had been tagged by the F.A.G fairy. Funny your deuce didn't get tagged that night.
Sorry I know to some this doesn't belong in this thread but they really have no idea who you are .

Let me know. I can do 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1 and 1 3/4. We are limited to the length/width of the board to 6x20, because that's all there is in stock. However, McMaster sells them. Might be best to just buy a small pack anyway. The boards in inventory are old and brittle and don't cut well sometimes, they crack between the letters. Can't see it in the picture, but on the stencil with the reg number, I had to blue tape the board in a number of spots. That is 1 3/4 lettering.

I know my method is lacking "oil", but in a pinch I have used a manila folders sprayed with a light coat of silicone or WD40 to make stencils ;)

I have a spare 3/4" Marsh electric (!) army surplus machine i should put up for sale , maybe both of them .. I bought them at DRMO Romulus, aka Seneca .. The place has been privately owned for a long time now, not sure if any of the army warehousing exists nor the former long runway..

I heard a "rumor" from a late-1960's USAF crypto/intelligence vet the place once had a underground air force facility of some sort, disguised by some WW2-style army supply depot buildings sitting above it , matching the other buildings in the area of course .. A former nuke weapons facility perhaps, but i don't recall everything the fella said

Too bad you can't do pin up girls. Miss Behavin is going to need a Proper " MISS BEHAVIN"

Yeah, manila folders tend to be a favorite of some people at the compound even though I have recommended that those NOT be used, probably the reason that the machines don't cut as they should. The oil in the board is supposed to lube and keep things sharp.

you are absolutely correct ! If i was making stencils more often than a couple every 10 years, i would invest in oilboard .. The WD or silicone is holding out fine .. I am more worried about the dies rusting due to non-use

This last week made a little more forward progress. The front winch was rats nested just like the back winch. The socket was wedged up into the fairlead but I was able to unwind it a little bit by cranking the engine with the ignition off. That was a while ago.

I got to looking at things and found that the level wind was all locked up. That means it needed to come off. I just took the whole assembly off the top of the winch to pull it apart, had to make some more felt washers for the leveling rollers as well as the upper shive, get rid of nasty, hard grease, polish some pieces and de goo a mess of things.

It was also time for a fluid change. I did note a while ago that there was milk coming from the seal at the input. Well turns out there was no oil in anything really. It was kind of ugly inside so I filled the cases full of diesel to clean it out. The seal immediately started leaking. Luckily, there was a number on the seal that was easy to see and our local industrial supply had one in stock! The old seal did not want to leave its home. I could tap it inwards and the seal was loose, but that SOB would not come out of the bore. After 20 mins of colorful words and destroying most of the seal, it found its way out of the bore. I had to do a bit of cleaning/polishing on the shaft and I also found a small lip on the housing. Upon further inspection, I noticed that the last time the seal was replaced, soldier A had used a hammer directly on the seal and missed a few times resulting in a bit of mushrooming on the housing at the bore. That explains the difficulty in removal. NG strikes again!

Got it all put back together, drive shaft in, new shear pin, lubed and fired the truck up and drove it out of the shop back into the display area. I hooked the winch to the M48 and just backed up. The Rat's Nest came out easily, but the drum just unwound by itself. Again, under the truck, but this time in the dirt. Looked up between the drum and LH housing and found the drum brake 1/2 inch from the drum. Who worked on this thing!!?? I was able to use an old school 90 degree offset screwdriver and turn the brake in so it tensioned the drum. I then proceeded to let the truck work harder than it has in who know how long and let the winch and load of the truck do its job. We now have an operational and neatly wound 20k Garwood winch!


It was lucky that the radiator wasn't taken out when it was last wound up!

And I did forget to mention that the LO and any TM for this vehicle or related one do not have a capacity for the non drive or the clutch side. The drive side should hold 2.6 pints, the clutch side, no info, so, I just filled it with 90wt up to about where the shaft goes through the drum.

After the work out spooling up 250 feet of cable, The winch developed a leak on the clutch, drivers side. Maybe I put too much oil in it?

We also had another issue. I was using low for the winch, truck in neutral, idle speed, maybe a bit above, 800 RPM. When I got within 30 feet of the M48, the engine started working, stopped sounded like it was loaded, went another 10 feet and almost died from the load.

I depressed the clutch, had another set of eyes look at the driveshaft, and it was not turning. Thought a sheared pin. Put the winch in high, and it wound up fine.

I think there is an issue with the winch PTO. Great, ANOTHER issue! I'll have to drop some fluid and see what comes out.
