What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

@TechnoWeenie I’d appreciate you posting pics back up once both headlights are installed and it’s darker out with both low and high beams. I’ve been looking for a better solution for my DD M1031. The halogen bulbs leave a lot to be desired. Unfortunately I’ve got 3 sets left and hate spending money. But if the light is that much better I might have to seriously consider it!

Those have a fuzzier cutoff - and also damn bright. Those are also the same as the ones that I currently have in my M1031.

I will be selling my M1031 so I will have pics of the lights but it'll probably be a couple weeks minimum.

One of the exhaust tips fell off my M1008 a while back. I'm probably going to replace the whole system at some point, as it's pretty horrible, but for now I just ordered some cheap bends and tubing and welded up a new end for it. Didn't turn out too bad, I don't think.



My brother and I also replaced the lift pump yesterday, because it'd been dripping fuel for a while, and while we were bleeding the fuel system, the starter brace just fell off. No sign of the bolt and nut anywhere, so it picked a good time to fall off rather than on the road where we wouldn't have noticed. Going to have to keep checking that.

And while I was driving it around, a german coin fell out of the dashboard. I had a feeling my 1008 had been in Germany so it's nice to find a bit more evidence to support that theory.

Threw the five used glow plugs that tested good from other truck into the cucv. They were champion brand and had .4 ohms. Cranked 5 times and started right up from cold, had 4 tested bad and changed one that was out of range

Indiana Jones would say that engine belongs in a museum. Does the red on the bolts signify anything, or is it just so they're easier to see?

Easier to see with a flashlight at night in a blinding snowstorm in Wyoming while installing a power steering belt 4 miles from the nearest road. Ask me how I know. All belts must be removed in order to install that rearward PS belt. There are 2 bolts to loosen for the passenger side alternator, 3 bolts for the drivers side alternator, and 4 bolts for the PS pump. And that bottom PS bolt is a bear.

Holy schnikes!! I never knew they made a supercharger for the 6.2!

My upgrades pale in comparison....just some basic maintenance. I've been getting the CUCV ready to bring out of winter hibernation.

I had my dash apart to replace the CUCV voltmeter with VDO 24v & 12V voltmeters. I also replaced the heater controls with a new one from LMC since the old one looked pretty ratty. While everything was apart, I cleaned all of the contacts on the cluster circuit board, and I added LED's from NAPA for the gauge lighting and voltmeters. I thought it turned out pretty well.


Next, I installed new alternator pulleys so I can use 1/2" wide FleetRunner V-belts instead of the factory 3/8" belts. Hopefully these will hold up better and eliminate the famous 6.2 belt-squeal. So far, so good. They seem to be nice and quiet. The real test will be when I put some miles on them this summer.

They are NAPA NightVisions. They are a little pricey at $8.39/ea....but i think they were worth it. Here's a link and pic of what to look for:

I only used them for the dash lighting....all of the idiot lights I left as incandescent bulbs. I didn't see the need to replace them all with LED's. Plus, you need to leave the GEN1 and GEN2 bulbs as incandescent anyway. So, you would need 4 total...three in the cluster for the speedo/fuel gauge, and one for the heater controls. But I also needed two extra for the VDO voltmeters....had to make those look cool too!

Sure do. I got them from DJ's Tractor Parts. The part number is AB-1426D. Here's a link:

They are nice, solid pulleys. Not like the stamped-steel originals...and they are the same diameter...3-1/16". While taking mine apart, I noticed one of the original pulleys was bent. So, it was probably good that I changed them.

One thing to note...if your alternator fans are the originals, they might not work. I found out the hard way. You need to get different fans and spacer bushings. So I ordered these off of ebay:

See how the center-section of the fan pictured above is formed as an "inny"? My original fans were formed with an "outty" and had a longer bushing underneath. Once I swapped them out, everything lined-up perfectly.

I'm at work right now (shhh!!)...but once I get home, I can take a pic of my original fans so you can see the difference.

Check out Super Bright LED’s their prices and color/brightness/quantity options are much better! I replaced all the standard bulbs in my M1097A2 several years ago since I didn’t want to spend the money for actual LED housings.

After 8 years with me the original tan paint on my M1028A2 had faded and become chalky, and I'm not a tan fan anyway, so I repainted it in 383 camo.
It was always my intention to repaint, and I had finally gotten around to adding a passenger side fuel tank. The body work for the fuel filler door meant repainting that area anyway, so I figured I might as well do the whole truck.

Two coats of grey primer, two coats of green, then the black and brown. Camo pattern was copied from the manual.

I did leave a large rectangle of tan on top of the cab. It is not visible from the ground, but will keep the roof from absorbing quite as much heat in the hot Texas sun.

Me neither....I like them either green or camo. Mine's a bit of an odd-ball. It got the 3-tone treatment. Guess some fellas were bored at JBLM one day...I dunno.

Beats me. How you see it is how it was auctioned off....except for the lift and wheels, of course.

It has DOL-IMD and CL IX CR-4 bumper markings and JOINT BASE LEWIS-MC CHORD on the bedsides. It also has a painted-on U.S. Army license plate on the front bumper, and on the tailgate.


A while back, I came across a PDF of JBLM's phone directory and found this...



I'm guessing that is the divison that it came from.
