This past week has been a good week for my 09. Pulled the valve covers to fix loose rocker arms. Still need gaskets to put the manifold back on. Today, pulled the top and will put a civi one on later as somone ran into the back of mine with a forklift. The regulator was missing out of the tailgate, so I pulled the electric one out of my civi parts truck. Now I have a power rear window. Started fixing the rear fender where a tire blowout wasted it. Might replace the panel later..... scratch that, will replace BOTH quarters later. :beer:

You might try putting some cayenne pepper on the wiring. Maybe mix it with a raw egg and spread it on the wire? Messy I'm sure, but probably less harmful to teach the dog that way than waiting for him to chew through a welder's 220V plug or something.
I had a flatcoat retriever that did that stuff. Anything long and thin got chewed. Rope, hose, wire, whatever. She just munched it all into small little pieces.

One morning I woke up and remembered I had left my good extension cord out overnight. Oh, no! She would destroy it! Ran outside, looked at the cord. Hmmm. Still intact. Examined it carefully. A few bite marks. Just a few.

Oh, I had left it plugged in! :shock:

She never bothered a hose, rope, or cord for the rest of her days! :mrgreen:


On a more helpful note, I have used the cayenne pepper to keep racoons out of the trash. It works, but you do have to keep it freshened. I just bought El Cheapo big canisters of cayenne from Costco. Spray the target down with water to provide something for the powder to stick to, then dust on the cayenne. I used vegetable spray (Pam) a few times to help it stick. It worked quite well.

I finally installed a Kats 600w block heater. A few good wacks on the freeze out plug with a 10in long punch, and it was out. I did manage to punch the plug into the water jacket, but had no problem removing it with a needle nose pliers and channel locks. I lucked out. I had to run 100ft of 12ga ridgid extention cord. I'll see what happens in the AM.

Finished with the new window felt on the outside edge of the tailgate window and the end caps on each side. Also replaced the window crank and lock mechanism of the tailgate. I had a locksmith match the door locks to the tailgate window crank lock. Added some weatherstripping all around the tailgate but still need to replace the rubber that used to be at the base of the removable tap where the tailgate meets. The old rotten stuff was removed during the paint job.

Looked at it. Indy4x4fab is helping me locate some more parts. I'm thinking of starting my own little build/restoration thread for it. I will probably be learning quite a bit about body work in the coming months.... and electrical gremlins.

Oh and I bought some more scepter MFC's and nozzles for it since I've never trusted a fuel guage in a MV. Just need to find a truck box for it.

We tried the pepper spray anti-chew stuff with my roommate's Border Collie / Aussie Shepard mix, the dog still ate through the fence. We then found out we could feed the dog as many jalapenos as he'd eat... other than really bad gas, no side effect. That dog liked the hot stuff....

So, I guess you could try the egg / cayenne mix, but if it doesn't work, it sounds like the plugged in extension cord... well, I'm not sure we could advocate that, it might be considered animal cruelty. How about some insulated wire connected to an electric fence charger? Those are supposed to be humane. :)

Vaccum Valve Adjustment

I got me one of these here thingy's: http://www.handsontools.com/assets/images/j-33043.jpg for a great buy. I was just about to make one when I found one at a really good price (about 1/3 of what I'd seen them go for). New and unused in original packaging. At that price my time making one was paid in full twice over.

I set about to adjust the vacuum valve on both my trucks. The valve on the M1009 was set all the way rearward. Shifts into 3rd were sloooooow. I had just replaced the modulator with the ATP red stripe equivalent, and it did improve the shifting a bit, but not enough. I adjusted the valve to the specs in the -20. Had to rotate the valve completely forward to get the specified vacuum. Now, my wife says it is way more powerful :driver:. I didn't have the heart to tell her that it was only that the truck was now sifting where it should have been. Plus, I likes to look like the hero once in a while.

The M1008A1 was spot on, and already rotated fully forward.

BTW, I used 3 separate vacuum gauges to ensure I set it correctly. So, either they are all set now, or I have 3 gauges all messed up exactly the same. :mrgreen:

The procedure in the -20 TM is very straightforward. Attach a vacuum pump to the lower nib on the vacuum valve. A vacuum gauge to the upper (transmission) nib. Pull a 20 inch vacuum, rotate the throttle until the stop screw contacts the J-33043 gauge block (detailed image in the TM). Rotate the transmission vacuum valve until the vacuum on the gauge reads abut 8 inches. Secure the valve, and double check.
