Pulled the right rear to replace all the seals since the CTIS is showing gear oil at the banjo bolt. It looks like that may have been a blessing.

In inner bearing and hub seal look miserable. We'll clean it all up in the morning to start planning next steps. Hoping the spindle cleans up. Looks like NAPA has the bearings and races.

Outers look okay.

Went ahead and pulled the left rear. Inner bearing packed thank goodness. Isn't that odd?

Just dropped the right side hub and bearing in parts cleaner to soak a bit before cleaning up for inspection; the left side looks good. Headed into town for some scotchbrite pads and such to see where we get on the right spindle—

What's the grease spec for those? Red, Blue, pride colors?

Ultimately it's just wheel bearing grease. I used Amsoil blue waterproof grease on all the trucks I've done hub services and ECO hubs on. No issues at all.


I suppose the military likes the yellow because you can tell when it's dirty and some soldier needs "remedial training"
Probably same as Cat NLGI #2 GC-LB blue utility grease. I have that in the 5gallon pump setup. Any issues you see with the Lithium type?

The Amsoil grease I use is a calcium sulfonate complex rather than a lithium complex. The calcium sulfonate has a dropping point of 315 degrees vs the lithium complex of 260 degrees. It also has greater shear stability, better water resistance, and higher pressure protection. It's better in every way actually - the only way lithium is better is cost - it's half the price. But you can do all the wheel bearings with a single $12 tube of Amsoil so there's really zero reason to use the inferior lithium complex grease - well there's 6 reasons I guess. And all six of those won't satisfy you at McDonalds.

NLGI grade is just a measurement of thickness. The Amsoil waterproof grease is also NLGI #2.

But GAA is Lithium so there's that. They are compatible in terms of being mixed so that's nice. Though it shouldn't matter when doing a hub service since all old grease should be removed.
