Thanks for the write up. I switched mine to NAPA dex 3 and noticed similar results. I'll never go back to motor oil! I tow heavy with mine and have approximately 8k on dex 3 and part of that is after adding a turbo, dual fuel and bumping up the power. Everything is good here. Keep us up to...
Here are a few pics of the dual fuel mod. It's a straight forward project, the hardest part is removing the plug from the rear head. I stole someone elses idea and used lapping compound on the allen head but that still didn't get it. I ended up using a torch to get it very hot then a proto...
The air shift diaphragm shouldn't have any air pressure unless your in 6wd. Is it pressurized all of the time? If so, it's hooked up wrong and that's an easy fix. Now if it's also blowing air by the seal on the actuator and pressurizing the case, pull the actuator because the piston or seal...
I did the dual fuel mod at the same time as the turbo install. I can't comment on if it made a difference or not since lots of other changes were made at the same time.
I wouldn't run a #5 and spin 2500 RPM, that's living on the edge. It must make massive smoke too.
I'm in Olympia. The main reason I did the turbo mod was to clear up the obnoxious smoke, the extra power was an added benefit. I bought a complete 335 and took all of the parts needed from that. The turbo is sized right for the power level I was after. I'll probably add an air to air...
Srodocker,
I see your not too far from me. I've pulled the Nisqually hill on I5 up toward hawks prairie with my equipment trailer and excavator in tow (about 22k plus truck weight) and was still going 40 mph by the time I hit the Hawks Prairie exit. Before the turbo, it would barely do that...
I've got about 5,000 miles on my turbo setup and love it! Initially I just added the turbo with no fuel mods. That gave a slight increase but cleared up the smoke. After about 1,000 miles I swapped the 27 button out for a 20 and added 1 shim to gain some RPM. That made all the different in...
If you look at the base of the fan, you'll see an air line attached to it. Follow that line back to a brass valve with 2 air lines attached, that is the shutter stat that turns the fan on. Now if you bypass that and hook the 2 lines together (with an 1/8" npt coupling available at lowes, depot...
It's probably your shutter stat. They sometimes stick from lack of use. I've had some stick on and some stick off. You can take the end off and clean/lube it but I usually just replace them. Doesn't make much sense overheating an expensive engine due to saving a few bucks on a part that is...
Did you check to make sure the throttle lever on the PT pump is returning to the Idle position? It can stick on the transmission modulator cable or the hand throttle cable. Try to grab it and pull it all the way back to see what happens.
Also, I wouldn't go back to that mechanic. He obviously isn't a diesel mechanic, between the TMs and reading through the info on here you should be able to learn how to fix any issues. Google "Cummins PT pump" to learn about your injection system.
The injectors are not computer fired. It's a completely mechanical diesel engine, very old technology. Make less assumptions and listen to others, you'll learn lots and have fun.
