    Steel Soldiers migration 12/9/19

...and it appears most of it has sadly been lost. As an example, recently member Oerthedge21 did us the favor of posting a thread, keeping us up to date on replacing the pistons and other engine work on his truck...

    Steel Soldiers migration 12/9/19

IMO, The site looks a bit more user-friendly now, but I really, really appreciated the Thanks Given and Thanks Received tallies by our avatars. When compared with an individual's # of posts, it allowed us to see not only who was likely to have pertinent content, but also let us know who was...

    Handling heavy tires

As is the case with the A3, My truck is singled, but with 395's. I've had them on and off more times than I can remember, using only a bottle jack and jack stands, but I've never had to "muscle" or lift them. WORKING ON THE FLATEST GROUND YOU CAN, Just raise the jack so the tire is still on the...

My Little Black Truck (Deuce ****)

Thanks, It steers and tracks wonderfully, but even with power steering, damper, and geometry improvements, at speed there is still some bump-steer encountered over bridge seams and the like. I believe that's just the nature of trying to tame the mass of 4' tires.

    Engine knocking LDS-456

In working on my truck, I spent an enormous amount of time researching old threads, on a budgillion different topics, as many of us have. A few pearls of wisdom regarding blow-by that have stuck with me... "If it's not consuming oil, it's not worn out" - Will Wagner, SS Moderator "Unless it's...

My Little Black Truck (Deuce ****)

Oh man... for the first 30 months I had the truck hardly a day went by that I didn't do something to the truck. It was an obsession. Regardless of weather, I worked my butt off to correct what had been done wrong, and to take care of the things that had been neglected, as well as making things...

    Engine knocking LDS-456

No, no, no, no... That is a misprint... TM torque spec for injector yoke bolts should read "150-175 inch-lbs".

    Engine knocking LDS-456

As far as your ticking goes, a compressor belt that isn't quite tight enough can cause a clacking or ticking sound, don't know exactly why, but I know that it certainly can. While we're on the subject of the compressor, I believe a compressor that's worn can cause some blow-by because the...

    Engine knocking LDS-456

Thank you so much for starting this thread, and keeping us up to date with your progress. Congrats on your first run, and I hope you don't have to re-visit anything you've corrected here for many, many years!:)

Portable or Bluetooth speakers in a deuce?

IIRC, you perforated your radiator a while ago while trying to drill a hole someplace else in the front of your truck. Just a few months ago you thought something major was wrong with your truck because it wouldn't move, turned out the transfer case lever was in neutral. Obviously you're human...

Portable or Bluetooth speakers in a deuce?

I operate my business right next to a body shop... Outside are rows and rows of late model smashed cars belonging to folks with the same kind of confidence. Thanks for your consideration.

Portable or Bluetooth speakers in a deuce?

None. I want to hear what's going on with the truck, and I want every bit of available attention given to what's going on around me. Driving 14,000 lb. vehicles with 70+ year-old brake and suspension technology, steering that's prone to harsh bump-steer impulses, no anti-locks, no air bags...

    Reflectors for our truck beds...

Just an FYI... I've found the NOS mil surp red reflectors to be crap... They have no manufacturer's or approval markings, and they haze over and fade badly within a few years of exposure. If you need to replace just the RED reflector inserts on your truck bed, I suggest you just buy these...

    Engine knocking LDS-456

I'm just way too frugal for my own good sometimes... As long as my oil analysis reports kept coming back clean and steady from the lab, and given the average mileage on these trucks is maybe 25k, in relation to the hundreds-of-thousands of miles most diesel engine rods and mains are capable of...

    Engine knocking LDS-456

Okay, Please help a brother out here... I see what looks like some rather light rotational scoring, a bit of pitting, and what appears to be a few tiny gougies, but it appears the majority of the bearing surface hasn't seen much wear due to the perpendicular lines still being readily visible...

    LDS465-1a smoke reduction at idle?

Although my engine isn't an LDS, I had the same problem using the same one-hole injector tips that I believe are often found in the LDS. I'd get flipped off in town by folks who got "gassed out" sitting next to me at a stoplight. The smoke would just cascade down out of the stack and engulf the...

    M35A2 Transmission

If it were mine, I'd replace those gears. 1st gear will be easy on the mainshaft since it slides right off once you get the mainshaft loose. I believe the corresponding gear is milled into the countershaft itself, so you'll have to replace it. It's all really pretty easy, just follow the TM, and...

    Airpak rebuild

Seems most of us have, through example, been led to believe that common white teflon tape is THE standard most often when it comes to sealing threads. But, if you do a little digging, you'll find out that the main purpose for said tape is actually NOT to seal, but merely to make the threads...
