Auto meter makes a low rev diesel tach, but its $130 and it looks nice when installed right and is very accurete. It also dosent take up much room the diameter is less them 3 inches.
If you read the Wikipedia Article it also says that in the 80's they were trying to get better gas mileage then power as that was the time of the oil crisis, the 6.2l got better miage then the 4.3l GM V6. Below is quote from the article

It is better to push, the reason they moved the fuel pump back by the tank is so on a hot day you don't get air bubbles in your fuel after you park. I don't know if this is true on a diesel but on a old gas engine with a mechanical fuel pump this was a problem.
Are you sure your fuel pump is turning on? The fuel pump would push fuel back up to the injection pump. It sounds like you are having the same problem i did, until i added a electric fuel pump, then it stopped. Because by turning the pump on before starting it would push fuel up to the injection...
