What is the output voltage at the alternator? and at the batteries??? I adjusted mine till I had 24.8 at the terminals.... Maybe help pinpoint your problem location...
I'm trying to get the current one off and replace it with a new one. How do I get to the nuts holding this piece in place??? Cant find a removal procedure in the TM???? Current bolts spin.... Thanks.
Update...
Put the old gauge in and it reads the same as the new gauge, so it wasn't broken. The sending unit made the difference.
Still reads about 220 on both gauges while driving.
I got my infrared gun and shot the thermostat housing after my test drive and still running.

1986 M998, original gauges....
Radiator flushed, new thermostat.
Temperature gauge never went above 160 deg. on the gauge. Cooling fan would engage on warm days.
Replaced the gauge, but still not above 160.
Replaced the temp sending unit, now it goes up to about 215-220 and stays in that range...
Just had a 700R4 with 4 speed shifter installed in my 998. WOW, what an improvement. For an apples to apples comparison at 55mph the 3speed was turning about 2700rpm and now it's about 2000-2100 rpm.
