Do a search for "recovery tool list" (without the quotes) and there are a number of threads with suggested items. On my last adventure, I also needed a set of triangles, flashlight and reflective vest for my safety in the middle of the road at night.
After about 1600 miles and about 36 hours on 24volts, some of the LEDs in each light have died, but enough still light up so that the lights are still bright and usable.
Being able to tow a new truck doesn't mean you're home free. I towed a truck that only had 22 hours on it since a Blount Island rebuild about 90 miles before a torsion bar came off and my recovery came to a screeching (literally) halt...
I also thought free-steering front axle would turn as needed to follow the truck in turns, the same as the front axle on a truck that was being flat-towed. You might want the ability to lock the axle straight or lift the axle so it wont go catawampus when backing. Having said that, one problem...
You will also have continuous air loss while holding the brake pedal down if you have the trailer service line valve open. Don't ask how I discovered that. However, that air will vent at the gladhand, not the intake stack.
I had that problem due to sand that had blown in and then water rusted to where it was frozen. I used the extension from another truck, flipped it around so that the back end fit around the bolt and rested against the back end of the stuck extension. Liberal applications of spray lube and a...
You said the diesel didn't smell right. Be advised that every truck I've bought from GL had JP8 in the tanks, which looks and smells different than diesel. There may be trash and water in the bottom of the tank, but the fuel should still be ok.
You could try using a drift pin to re-align the holes from each side, then slide the pin in. You may still have to use a hammer to knock out the pin after use, so keep the drift pin or smaller diameter bolt and hammer handy. The trailer should not be hitched when you do this.
Or use a...
Just looked close at my M1101, and the outside of the tires were about 1/2" inside the trailer sides, so 85" is probably a good guess for the minimum deck width. I had 2 M105s on a 20 foot flatbed car hauler with the tongue of the rear one on the deck under the back of the front one. The...
I've helped Jeff Davis use his Ibis Tek 44K tow bar to tow a number of 5-tons off Camp Shelby. With the previous posts of its failure in mind, I inspected the towbar and found no visible signs of metal stress or cracking. I know this is just one data point, which is statistically meaningless...
The initial walkabout would not find a dragging spring brake. I've had two trucks that only showed heat after 20-40 miles. When the spring brakes were caged for that hot wheel, the hub and wheel temp dropped quickly when I started moving again. That does illustrate why you should stop and...
