Wow! My truck bogs down to 1500 rpm by it's lonesome on hills. That's why trailer/load weights concern me. I have a low hours whistler turbo motor. It seems to run great, but it doesn't like hills. How can your truck pull so much better than mine?
I just read something on Northern Tools concerning hydraulic disc or drum surge brakes. When you brake the tow vehicle the forward inertia of the trailer compresses a master cylinder which operates the trailer brakes. It has a defeat solenoid for backing up. I think the cost was $675 for the...
Eager Beaver are great trailers. I once pulled one behind a Mack R model, but the Mack had almost double the horse power and torque of a multifuel. I think Eager Beaver tandems weigh in the 10k range unloaded.
There are two companies (Appalachian & Econoline) that make very nice pintle hook equipment trailers. They are much lighter at 3,500 to 4,500 pounds than many of the really heavy duty trailers with air brakes which can weigh five tons empty, but they can still haul anywhere from a five ton to a...
I'm with Zout. You are doing a top notch job. Your craftsmanship raises the bar for me. Your Sherman is going to be like new when done! What an education it will be for folks who see it. Thanks for sharing your personal history with us. My son Dan also grew up around nuts and bolts with me and...
As long as it runs okay (with the exception of the leaking wheel cylinder) it's a good buy at that price. I've seen some pretty rough Deuce's going for double that. You can always count on our fellow SS members for solid advice when you need it. Good luck!!!
Sounds like the original wire in the rear harness might have broken. Hence, the jumper was made. Make sure you have a dual filament bulb in that position. I think the bulb is a #1628. The last time I had a blinker problem I traced it to water being present inside the military connector on the...
I figured you would need a panhard rod, but I couldn't see it in the picture. I guess you made a custom bracket for the differential mount. How did you locate shorter bags? Custom shock mounts? Did you use a valve to control the air? Your trucks attitude and stance are perfect. A great blend of...
Digger that is a totally awesome looking bobber!!! The first pic really shows the suspension detail nicely. So that's a Peterbuilt air leaf suspension? It must be good for 19,000 lbs. if you figure it came from the standard 38k tandem rear tractor setup on civy trucks. I'm going to have to look...
Just knowing you used a Freightliner suspension helps. I would love to see the pictures of the air suspension if you can post them or send them to me. The truck must look weird when the bags are deflated. Way down in the rear. I wonder how the air springs would work off-road?
That's another good idea. I wonder if heavier springs would control axle hop better? I hit some pretty bad washboard road surfaces here in NJ and boy do my heavy, dueled Firestone T-831 tires bounce around. I worry about stuff breaking. I wonder where you could get those helper air bags?
I'd like to get the measurements on them. I bet they're wider than 2.5 inches. I probably wouldn't be able to use the stock Deuce axle mounting hardware. I have a friend Glenn who owns a 900 series 5 ton. I should ask Glenn to measure his springs for me. He's always been helpful.
Digger, I am considering everyone's suggestions and yours is certainly interesting. Do you have any pictures and details on the air bag installation? I'd love to find out more. Thanks!
Thanks LowTech
Thanks LowTech. That's good to know. I thought about going to the end of one of the cuts and making a perpendicular notch for a sheet metal screw in the filter housing tube the mushroom goes over. That way you would push it home and then turn it a few degrees kind of like a turn...
Thanks DW! Great post! I'm sure I'll be doing this in the future. I sure do envy you guys with work benches. I do my repair/painting stuff out on my third floor apartment balcony. I must've put on a million miles this year trudging up and down the stairs to my apartment and my truck in the...
You're welcome DW. The governor only sees lube oil, but dirt in an injector might cause it. Some injector designs employ a finely lapped check valve who's mission it is to prevent fuel dripping into the cylinder between injections strokes. I would try adding a small quantity of diesel fuel...
Yessir DW! The first time it happened to me I really puckered up. You might have a leaky injector or a worn governor in need of adjustment. Is your hoe a two or four stroke? Sorry if I'm over-posting guys.
