    M871 Trailers @ Ft Polk

27 of them were split between 2 buyers. I think I bought the only single trailer for a $3600 bid. I did see some identical condition 3-axle trailers that will be coming up in the future, so start saving your money.

How do you mark your bumper?

To this point, I have been leaving the most recent markings on them. If I repaint to the period OD paint from the late 60's, I may research a Vietnam period unit marking.

    Cargo area light

I bought a few from Walmart like this with a magnet base to use in the cabs. I guess it would also attach to the metal bow brackets. The peel and stick ones PB refers to would stick to the bows if the surface was smooth and not weathered. I'd use a screw to attach due to the rough ride. I...

    Camp Shelby semi trailer recovery

The M818 by itself does about 52 mph at 2100 RPM, but seems happier doing 50 mph at 2000 RPM. I think the governor kicks in at around 2300, but I try not to get that high. With the trailer hitched, I was cruising at around 49 mph at 2000 RPM.

    Camp Shelby semi trailer recovery

Yes, it was the one that looked full of junk, but it was just styrofoam that someone had put on the ceiling that had fallen down, and some wood. Took me about 1 hour to clean out, and pull out the remains of a wooden inner wall. The ladder is nice, but doesn't fit the bumper holes. I hope to...

    Camp Shelby semi trailer recovery

Well, I picked up my “M119A1 Trailer, cargo, van” at Camp Shelby Thursday. This was my first solo recovery (Bryan 4583794589349889 wanted to come, but he was working about 200 miles offshore). It was a 3-hour drive each way in my M818, and it was nice bonding with the old girl. Actually, she’s...

    Oil for power steering?

Thanks all!!! I'm taking back the PS fluid. I used the ATF today on a 270 mile trip and found that it was leaking at the Right Front Cylinder. I had to add about 1/2 pint after every 135 miles. Need to find that leak and fix it. I'll go for the hyd. oil if I can't find the SAE 10W.

    Oil for power steering?

What do you use for power steering fluid in the 5-ton? I've read LO manual and it says to use HDO 10 oil (I'm guessing Heavy Duty 10 weight oil with detergents) Trouble is, I can't find SAE 10 oil anywhere - Walmart, AutoZone, Napa, Tractor Supply. Tractor supply has non-detergent 10W oil...

Suggestions Wanted! Your Input Is Welcome!

Ditto - he beat me to it. Ditto also to all who said this was a great site, and thanks for the hard work by all involved to make it such.

    deuce brake test

I love my air horns That's what the air horns are for. The deuce and 5-ton air horn is much nicer than the wimpy horns on modern vehicles. Much easier to find, too, than most of them on the steering wheel.

    New rig!!! M35A2

Just look at that empty parking are just waiting for some trailers, a shop van, a 5-ton, ... Nice truck, and a lot less hassle buying from Frodo than GL, I'll bet.

    Political Messages on your MV

I'm too contrary to be a joiner. Hell, it took me 4 years to join this site after I found it, and I still don't post much. The only sticker I allow on any of my vehicles is the United States flag. That says all that needs to be said. 'Otherwise, what I think and believe is no one's business...

    my new m105 with box!

Think about putting in a steel door that's lockable. I got one a couple of months ago with a steel door (that needs some work, made of sheet steel and 1" angle iron), since I figured if you travel with a Deuce, it's hard to secure your neat stuff. Mine has some insulating panels of...

    Adding a fuel tank

If you already have the original tank and lines heated for WVO use, just keep the new tank for diesel only in the winter. That may help with starting in cold weather, and once running, switch back to tank #1. That way you don't need to heat tank #2 and the lines. In warm weather, you can put...

    Towing a M105a2 w/ civilian Pick Up ?

Now, that's a neat idea for highway travel. Bolt the hitch plate to the bed frame at the back edge and the hitch pointing up. May have to use a larger plate on top, as well as a brace under the bed to spread the lateral loading. I can unhitch now using a farm jack, but hooking up by...

    another new guy (east, tx)

Welcome to SS:-D. Go to the Resources tab at the top, then Technical Manuals in the pull down. Then find, download and read TM 9-2320-361-10 which is the operator manual for the Deuce. That will get you started. I find it useful to print out part of the manual and keep it in a 3-ring...

Where did all the M35A3's go?

Almost all of the A3's, as well as some M931 5-ton tractors, and M820 expandable van 5-tons at Camp Shelby are tagged for Morocco. Somewhere between 25-40 vehicles based on a quick drive through. I had been waiting for months for the M820 to get to GL, but that won't happen now.

So you want to buy a cheap truck from GL?

I didn't mean to say all the problems are GL's fault, since a lot of the issues are hidden from view. I've also met great folks at Camp Shelby, Redstone, Little Rock and Pineville. Others are...well, let's just say they are less than great. A couple I've met shocked me that they were able to...
