I realize that many of us have flat towed trucks at high speeds and for considerable distance but FWIW I think the TM for the truck and the towbar TM both state in bold letters to never tow a vehicle without and operator in it to steer. Maybe the DOD knows best?

What we didn't have was a camera to take a picture of the d%&m snow! It was windy with mixed snow and rain and neither DH's truck or the M813A1 I bought had heaters so the wipers had a challenge.
The last time DH and I saw the truck and trailers we were picking up it was late January or...
For me, the most desirable of them, if you only have one, is the 20' NATO job with two adapters. It's a good cross between length and transportability and will jump to or from anything that has ever had a slave receptacle. I you are making them, like some of the others here, I'd go a little...
Bruce, when it grabs does it feel like the truck is being held back or more like a giant has a hold of the rear bumper? Sometimes you can feel one or the other. The pull from behind feeling would indicate a rear brake.
You could try to replicate the action on a gravel surface with someone...
LC, GL doesn't do anything with it. They forward it to the Defense Logistics Agency who verifies that you are who you say you are, that you you can legally buy the item etc.
Gl reviews it to try to be sure that the form is filled out correctly and that it will clear the DLA review but it's the...
Bob, while you are there why don't you pick up the M813A1 and four M101s I've got there? You could stack all them in your trailer......
Good luck and enjoy the trip.

LC, it isn't just an issue with first time buyers. I have bought a lot of vehicles and trailers from GL and have bought several in the last year. My EUCs for 4991 and 5007 were pulled for a "periodic assessment" in which they take a closer look than usual at the paperwork and the applicant. I...
Before you do much towing I'd put an aftermarket transmission cooler on it. The THM-400 is a very tough transmission but as in all transmissions heat is it's wost enemy and since these critters didn't come with heavy duty towing packages the stock system leaves much to be desired. It's a PITA...
Sooo...how good a relationship do you have with this friend? A permanent loan seems kind if iffy for something he'll still own but on which you'll be doing all the work and spending all the $.
Still, nice find.

Hello, Dan, welcome to the herd.
You didn't really ask any questions but I'm guessing you are looking for information or comments.
How much experience have you got with these things and what's your comfort level for dealing with a breakdown or commercial towing bill?
I don't think you are...
Are there any Miller dealers around you? They might be willing to look at it. Even if they charged you for the diagnostic time it would be worth considering.

I've never driven or owned a half track but spent quite a few years around APCs, tanks and retrievers.
If the chunking seems to happen more on turns you could try to avoid single arc tight turns that put a lot of shear stress on the rubber and break tight turns into a series of short turns to...
If there's a Tractor Supply nearby, they stock it. Are there any welding shops, body shops or sandblasting outfits ( that includes folks who do grave head stones) you might be able to piggy back a purchase with? Also, most auto parts places can get t at reasonable prices.

tennmogger is on the right track. If you know someone with an excavator or backhoe make relief cuts through the roots on three sides leaving the roots in the desired direction of fall so those roots act as a hinge.
As a home builder we take out hundreds of trees with a large backhoe or, more...
When you say it's "locked up solid" do you mean there is no play at all or it turns some but stops? Has the steering worked recently or is this the first time you've tried to turn it in a long time?
It's a lot of years since I worked on these but these things have always been a PITA for...
