Well, that much play seems normal to me. It's inherent to the design, and it may take a couple of turns at the driveshaft, before the drum actually "locks in" and starts moving.
Pics below may help to explain this...

Thanks for the good info.
Just to confirm what I said in post #4: for the M105A2 and A2C models the inner and outer cone is #39590; inner and outer cup is #39520
(NSN 3110-00-198-1757 refers to one complete cone/cup bearing set)
Not so surprising really, if you think that the outer end of...
In the maintenance instructions it says never to use any grease.
Now, if it was just for function then yes, better NO grease than too much!
But for durability and to prevent corrosion I would recommend covering all metal parts with a thin film of grease. A toothbrush works great for that.

Very sad! Way too soon!
We will certainly miss him, he was one of our long-time members and frequent posters (4220 posts, since 2007).

Up to 120 psi is normal. (Relief valve opens at 135 or so.)
Do what Gimpy suggested.
Possible causes: Eventually someone replaced the master cylinder and failed to readjust the push-rod length - now being too long.
Or there is enough dirt/rust that has collected between MC-piston and...
Depends what tools you have - or prefer to use - for that job. For a big transmission jack it might be better to have some extra room to maneuver. But if you used the classic chain-fall method then the front drive shaft can stay attached.
M105 & M105A1 are the same size and diameters (same bearings) as the Deuce axles: Ø 66.675" inner, Ø 61.912" on the outer end.
M105A2 & A2C have Ø 66.675" on both ends, inner and outer side. (I'm almost certain that the bearing numbers are 39590/39520)

For comparison:
3 comp.ring-LDT piston: 4-7/8" tall + 5-1/8" skirt => total length 5-1/2"
2 comp.ring-LDS piston: 5.0", no skirt => total length 5.0"
