In my experience, check that the area where the clamp holding the turn signal lever meets the steering column is free of corrosion. Also, loosen the bolts holding the lights in place and retighten them (or do this the right way, an remove the lights and make sure the bolts and the lamp housing...
Phill,
I'd pull an engine oil sample and have it analyzed. Cat, and other similar dealers sell the kit and service to do this. It is relatively inexpensive, and can give you an exellent overview of your engine's wear.

David Doyle
I live in an agricultural and trucking intensive area - and any injection pump service shop in the area can perform these tests - note that many diesel shops don't have this equipment, but injection pump shops all do. It is helpful to take the TM pages regarding the nozzle with you, as the...
I have a few more minutes this morning, so I thought I'd take a stab at questions 3 and 4. The nozzle and holder assembly of the Multifuel engine is one of the most precisely made and adjusted components of the entire truck. To go back to the garden hose illustration that I used earlier, if we...
FWIW, photos of new vehicles as delivered to the military indicate that the hoses (and belts) were black. Those that are overall OD or green are the result of rebuild - and at least one of the rebuild manual says that the hoses were to be masked with bandages to keep them from being painted -...
No dry movement of parts is good, but keep in mind that the op manual says to pull out the engine stop, turn the engine over with the starter for a period of time, then push in the stop to start the engine. While the primary objective is to check for hydrostatic lock, getting the oil...
Bjorn,
Some of your questions are addressed in my forthcoming book (hence the copyright notation below),but I will be happy to answer some of them here. And I'll warn all, some of these answers will probably not coincide with preconceived notations, which when I was teaching classes on such...
Uncle Sugar would have painted the troop seats in the MERDC scheme, when the truck was painted. Spare parts would have likely been semi-gloss OD, and would have been painted to match the truck at the whim of the CO.
Best,
David
Add the linkage and two pins from the lever to PTO to your shopping list. And some gaskets/shims....which you can't rely on coming from the donor truck.
Regards,
David
First of all - I understand that it is your truck to do with as you like. However, the four-color camo scheme, known as the MERDC (Mobility Equipment Research and Development Center ) was originally intended to have covers PAINTED in camo to match the vehicles. But, a paint for the canvas was...

RE: I have a
Yes, its 331 cid Reo Gold Comet. It is a sleeved engine, so boring the block won't be needed. Bearings are available in multiple sizes - you could check the journals with plasticgauge. On other subjects, is the equipment still in the box body?

David Doyle
RE: I have a
The OA-331 is a sleeved engine, and was popular with commercial truckers - hence parts are relatively plentiful, and fairly inexpensive and available through not only surplus dealers but also NAPA. The crankshafts tend to be a little "soft" and score easily.
Do you still have the...
RE: Thanks guys
Whether termed rubbing or bumping - I feel certain that dual wheels contacting each other will lead to premature sidewall failure. Its been well over20 years since I worked for a tractor-trailer leasing firm - but I can say that I have never seen a highway vehicle design that...
RE: Thanks guys
I'd be very carefully regarding sidewalls rubbing with dual 11:00-20 tires...I don't think it would take much of a load to cause this.
The offset of the rims of M135/M34 wheels is different from those of the M35 - the rear hubs (only) are reversed which brings them in line with...
top military aircraft
I was interviewed by the Military Channel for their "top ten APC" episode - I made it to the cutting room floor - but my friend who had tagged along with me stayed in, despite "speaking" a typo. However, the experience did give me an insight into how these shows are...
