Bjorn,
Now you've covered both halves of the question. Keep in mind when ordering paint you need to cite both the FSN and the FS number, and make sure that your paint vendor does the same thing. Many don't understand this, and use the current FS chart (FS 595B).
You and I both know someone...
I just wanted to move this topic back to the top - I'm still working on making something meaningful from this data.
Any more VIN/serial/registration numbers appreciated.
Regards,
David Doyle
RE: Paint
Bjorn,
You're only asking half the question, and only getting half the answer. In order for the FS numbers to mean ANYTHING, you have to know what standard they are referring to. For example, 24087 is one color in FS595, and a different color in FS595A.
Best wishes,
David Doyle
There is a rather elaborate website about the Pershing batteries, their deployments, and rotations. Pershing batteries and equipment circulated globally a great deal more than many other units did.
Best wishes,
David
Army regulations state in TB746- something during the time these trucks were delivered new that vehicles IN the US were not to have the national symbol (star), only those deployed overseas (counter what is stated above by others).
In the US, it was unlikely to be confused with a foreign...
Try this the old fashioned way, buy a paper manual from the Federal Government at 1-800-553-6847.
I have not looked for this particular manual - but others which aren't available on LOGSA have been available here. This is obviously more expensive than free - but in the long haul a good set of...
RE: FS colors; here
PLEASE keep in mind that there are multiple editions of the FS595 - and more importantly, the colors assigned to various numbers are NOT the same between edition. The Semi Gloss OD many of us are fond of is a case in point. If you look at a paint spec dated from a specific...
Jeff,
I have done some investigation into this. The information I got from the state of TN mimics what Chuck said - that is that so long as I was not engaged in Commerce, a CDL is not required. Was in a wreck once - presented my operator's license - size, weight, etc. of vehicle was not an...
The military installed a liftgate on certain variations of the expansible van - you might take a look at the appropriate TM for guidance.

While the M62 and M543 manuals state that they can "recover any wheeled vehicle" in the army's inventory, a later PM Magazine item specifically prohibited towing the ten-ton with a five ton wrecker, under ANY circumstances. What did the army recommend using? - A M88 - which would make for a...
I MAY have caps...and the engines were used in Reo over the road trucks in the early 1950s. They were also license-built by Continental, who assigned it model number COA-331.
It'll be a couple weeks before I'm at the shop again and able to check on the caps.
Best,
David Doyle
Bjorn,
The trailers were actually erector/launchers, and thus were also included in the SALT treaty. I did an article on the Ford 8x8 and Pershing for the British publication Classic Military Vehicles - it appeared in issue 62 (July 2006) which you may find useful.
Best,
David Doyle
The information in my Standard Catalog came from a painting bulletin - TB-746- something as I recall (I'm on the road in Alabama at the moment). They pertain - as they say - to a M35. The 85% figure that I refer to comes from a Engineer Field Manual on bridging. The 06 that Kenny and others...
From the number you have provided, it appears that your truck was built by Reo Motors in Lansing Michingan in the last half of 1950.
If you need additional information I will try to provide it.
I hope this helps,
Sincerely,
David Doyle
The operator's manual warns that the shifter should always be moved into (or at last) through first when changing directions. This is so that the proper sprag unit will be selected. While the engine has enough torque to start from second, it is possible that you will be trying to drive forward...
RE: Re: What
This truck I believe a transporter for searchlights from about 1938-39 - I am on the road with none of my records, but I feel strongly that I am correct. I'll try to get more info for you next week.
Best wishes,
David Doyle
