Sprag adjustment?? Where is the article?

Nah.....adjusting the sprag is a lot easier than it reads (except on the M135).....and unless you drive it a LOT, will be trouble free. The main thing is ALWAYS move the shift lever through the first gear position when shifting from reverse to forward motion. Best wishes, David Doyle

    Engine problems?

Nope, that definately is not normal! Good luck! David

    Sprag Adjustment for 5 tons

Yes, if your wrecker is a M543 - or, if like mine, a M62, or even an 800 series, then no, the front end is not pulling until the rear end slips, then it hooks up. David

    Question about airshift

    Yep, what Chuck said. David

    Engine problems?

It'd be helpful too, if you have not been around a M123A1 running, make an effort to before you start tearing down the engine. The V-8 Cummins is much noiser than the Multifuel or a 6-cylinder Cummins - as a friend of mine says - they remind him of a threshing machine when running right! Hope...

    Chassis Number

As Kenny said, there should be four more numbers prior to this IF it is a Kaiser-Jeep, General Products, or AM General truck. However, 31098 would be right for a 1953 Studebaker-built truck....if you think its a Studebaker, then more information is needed to confirm this. FWIW, the next issue...

    Sprag Adjustment for 5 tons

LC - dunno what you mean by digging in - but the design is that the front wheels are not powered until the rear wheels are slipping. Both five tons, and the early M35 have two sprags - one for forward, and another for reverse. The selector between forward and reverse is controlled by a linkage...

    XM757 steering

Contact Bob Anderson for the Ford parts - I believe you know him. Best, David

    XM757 steering

I failed to finish my earlier thought - CRS setting in perhaps - to finish now - I'd consider trying to find a single NOS ball joint - and compare its "feel" to the feel of yours - strange as it may seem, your joints COULD be performing as intended. Regards, David

    XM757 steering

I'd be REAL reluctant to start drilling holes and reengineering the joints and vehicle without any more data. In fact, my inclinition would be to reassemble the vehicle and take it for a CAREFUL test ride.....a few passes over even mild off-road conditions (a plowed field, for example) will...

    5 ton wheelbases

The wrecker frame is substantially different from the cargo truck frame, even when the same length. While the wrecker body will fit on a cargo truck - the resulting truck would not be suitable for use under the same conditions of a factory-built wrecker, which has a much more robust frame...

    Manufacture Dates

RE: Re: RE: Manufacture Dates Joseph, I deliberately have deleted information that would tie a specific vehicle to a specific person. If you'll resend me the serial number of the M109 - then I can answer your question. Best wishes, David

    1952 studebaker

Why does it always seem that the cool (aka odd) deuces are always thousands of miles from me?! Hope someone saves it. David

    Manufacture Dates

Re: RE: Manufacture Dates Nope Joel, I meant long wheel base - almost everyone gets this wrong. According to the Army, Reo and AM General - the M35 etc. are long wheel base trucks. The M36-series are termed by the same sources as extra-long wheelbase - while short wheel base trucks include...

    Thinking about buying a deuce

A gas-powered M35 has very, very little engine noise when compared to its Multifuel brothers. All these trucks have a lot of gear noise at highway speeds. Hope this helps, David Doyle

    Question about airshift

Reo Motors designed these trucks to have automatic front axle engagement via an overrunning clutch - usually called a sprag. Whe the rear wheels spin, the front axle engages. When positive traction is restored to the rear axles, the front axle disengages. In about 1951 a particular officer -...

    M105A3 TrailerQuestions

This, as I recall, is the trailer that was reengineered to be used with the FMTV - at last as an interim until the problems with the purte FMTV trailers were ironed out. No help on the unit markings. Best, David Doyle

    Question about airshift

There is a lever that is mounted to the bottom edge of the dash that - that lever is an air valve, flipping it engages and disengages the front axle. Hope this helps, David Doyle

    M105A3 TrailerQuestions

Need to see pix to fully understand what you have - but can tell you an "X" in the registration number NWOX1Q does not signify experimental - in fact, unlike aircraft, even in the model number (such as XM211) it does not mean experimental. It designates a vehicle that has not been type...
