I have access (as in demo samples) to VERY large 24VDC motors. This would be a very interesting project that I might want to get involved in to see what my motors can do. Currently they are powering hydraulic braking for subway trains....

I have a bucket truck that has a tandem generator/hydraulic pump that runs everything. The truck engine is shut down and the pony runs everything. The hydraulics are too small on this one for a wrecker but I can get pics of the setup for ideas.

I make my living selling parts to OEMs. Just because something is used by everybody doesn't mean its better. My equipment is top-end and must be specifically requested by the end user. Otherwise they get the standard (cheaper, more common) items. Not having an opinion here as I don't know...

The effort to turn the steering wheel is assisted by the aux unit. Ultimately there is no additional torque applied to the steering box (except like Clinto mentioned you lose the "Armstrong" fuse). I don't know how else I can explain this.

Did you go all the way to 1st right away? If so the tranny saw the error of your ways and did not downshift as commanded. Its best to click down one at a time until you find the right gear.

Personally on pulls like that I prefer to manually select and eventually up shift.

I disagree. This device assists the driver in turning the column. The laws of physics don't change between where the shaft enters the steering box and the steering effort is exerted out to turning the wheels. That does not change, this device lessens the effort that the driver is required to...

This is not increasing the torque exerted on the steering box, it is assisting with the effort of turning the steering column.
