Gear vendors and drive train loading

You will be pushing a lot of air, that is more of a load than the weight of the vehicle. This will increase slip in the torque converter which manifests as heat in the transmission fluid. This is the problem with the Gear Vendor's OD unit. Bear in mind the stock engine torque curve too, you...

CUCV alternator symptoms, diagnosis and fix.

I found an interesting cause to a GEN2 light not illuminating with key on, engine off situation. It was a dirty relay which switches the back battery to the alternator's brown wire (voltage sense). These are the Bosch brand relays under the dash. The truck had been refinished sometime in the...

    M1009 bahr paint

All depends on application. I can base coat a 1009 with three pints using high volume, low pressure Husky brand gun. This is diluted a bit and with Floetrol (pint of paint, 4 fl oz of Floetrol, 8 fl oz distilled water). This works in the sun with dew point in the 50s and ambient temps in the...

    Exterior Latex/Acrylic House Paints

That is the most painful part of refinishing. Hopefully the guy I am helping will see this and realize I am not kidding about the sanding every surface. His truck had been plastic media blasted inside and out, the paint that was applied peeled and chipped so I mandated 100% removal outside...

CARC paint;how to remove-yet another question...

Knotted wire wheel in an angle grinder also works well, making less respirable dust with larger chips. Still, you should wear a nuisance mask and goggles with face shield. Northern Tool has the best deal on wire wheels, they last about the same as others at half the price. If you go the...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Not for cold climates. I've had bad luck with Optimas in diesel engines. They get voltage depression during extended pre-glow periods, then they lack the voltage to crank with enough speed. Might work in warmer climates but absolutely not in Montana.

    Speedometer vs GPS

Common. At indicated 65 MPH, my M1031 is doing 62 MPH per GPS.

    1031 water leak in cab

That grill at the base of the windshield is a large gutter, it drains into the fenders through a short down spout. It will dribble onto the kick panel vent. If you remove the kick panel vent and use a garden hose, you can see this down spout. Using aluminum flashing, make an extension 4-6"...

    Vacuum hose routing?

Bingo. GM used that keyed connection to assure proper orientation. But since that part is hard to find and always rotten after 25 years, direct connection with this mnemonic in mind makes everything work right. I do believe I coined this phrase ;)

Another "source" for alternator and p.s. belts for our CUCVS...

I got my spares from another online retailer...for even less. Domestic made too. If you know the numbers, searching is easy. This is a problem with most auto parts stores, they only know application and if you have the size/part number, they are flustered. Ran into that tonight on a coolant...

    M1009 Ready for Deployment

The Marines still run the UH1 and AH1.

    bleeding fuel injection lines

Is the pink wire connected to the fuel shut off solenoid? Does it have voltage when cranking? Measure the current through this circuit, should be at least 5 amperes.

    bleeding fuel injection lines

It should not take that long to purge the system. Loosen all 8 lines at the injectors, just a turn or two is all it takes. Also, flooring the accelerator will greatly speed the process. It will not start with the injector lines loose. Before you kill another starter, make sure the priming...

    pressurewasher sandblaster attachment

The paint on the vehicle in question is chalked and aged, it doesn't appear to be primed either as it is easily chipped. I just don't want to have to use a wire wheel over the entire vehicle. The sand will also work well on rust spots, there are a few due to the poor prep work. Yes, it is an...

    Timing Gears on 6.2

The cam should still be chain driven. The IP is driven by a 1:1 gear set off the cam. Should be a chain drive behind the IP gear.

    Steering issues with m1008

Check the upper king pin bushings.

    fuel mileage

Low of 13 MPG for city, 19 MPG on highway for my 1031 SECM.

should I remove/bypass the GP resistor with Wellman 070s?

How about keeping the system stock and adding a glow plug voltmeter next to the 24 voltmeter in the dash? A simple 12 volt automotive meter will show if the voltage increases which will tell you if a glow plug burns out and the controller card doesn't catch it. My hypothesis is with the...

    Shifting issues?

Before you go adjusting the modulator, check to see if the vacuum regulator on the injection pump is functioning properly. Tee in a vacuum gauge to the TOP line, then drive and see if vacuum is roughly 18" Hg at idle, dropping to under 2" at wide open throttle. The regulators are nearly...

    Solargizer used for different things

A Solargizer puts out about 40 mW of power at high noon. A block heater takes at least 200 watts. That is 0.040 W compared to 200 W. You could cover your 1008 with solar cells without any meaningful warmth.
