Well Jake, it's not easy to see in the above image, but there are actually brass sheaves on the nails.
I see you point regarding the use of the transmission to help the process along. All in all, the whole rig is rather impractical IMHO....probably why it isn't included in the FM 20-22.
True, but the restaurant pays the renderer, not the other way around and the renderer has no way of knowing how much oil is used. After the huge price increase in VO, from $13/35lb a couple of years ago to $25/35lb now, restaurants use the oil longer. Lots of variables.
After reading some terrific posts in the fleet angle and winching ops threads, I'm hoping for more (working on my masters in winching :-)).
Any comments on how the cable is wound on the drum based on right or left "lay"?
The restaurant pays to have the WVO removed and the renderer provides a container for the restaurant to use for the grease that it dumped in it. If the restaurant decides to dump some of the WVO into another barrel (mine), that should not be any of the renderer's business, am I wrong? At least...

Made a model too, kinda crude, but it shows that it works. :-)
Kenny, the picture comes from PS mag issue #137 (1964). Find all the pages in the "Recovery section" already uploaded (PS magazines, old site).

This will back you up Jon, from the 1979 #321 PS magazine. Multigrade is available, but use only in POVs.

Thanks for responding! I checked the FMTV winch set-up and it gets a straight pull 100% of the time via guide rollers along the frame and no level winder is needed (as far as I can determine any way).
If you come up I-77 in VA and need help, call me 540-593-2001.....may be able to help with parts hunting and/or tools if needed. Good luck on your trip!
