Firstly, welcome to the hobbie. You should allways look for the lowest mileage you can get, just like for any motor vehicle you might wish to buy. Same goes for the condition and any servicing records. And doing a google search reveals a wealth of information, as well as the technical manuals...
The front gladhands are for input air only. the yellow to apply the (towed) truck brakes. And the red to charge (the towed truck) air tanks. And so they have one way valves to stop the outflow of your trucks air supply. Whichever one of these on yours is leaking wants servicing or replacing...
Best Choice?
Well the wisest choice may be the (not so much) smaller vehicle if you have not owned one of these (type of) trucks before. Certainly easier to drive maintain and generally look after. The deuce will certainly do all the things you are looking to do, with the added benefit of...
As long as you keep the inside of the battery terminals clean (clean them with emery paper) and make sure everything is tight..you will be good to go all the time (as long as the battery is good). When the ameter rests towards neutral that only shows a nicely charge battery state.

If i had no other means.I would use our big oil grease gun and pump till something showed (or) and then use our gearbox omd 330 filler gun. at the same plug points shown. just an idea.
I have deuces and 5 tons..and they all suck in those gears..nothing wrong with your engine. The bedford r.l. and zill dont have silly ratios like that.makes me wonder who designs and tests these trucks.
I looked aroundgoogle and found usefull pictures to givean idea as to what would be suitable, and pity my other hard drive broke..but I seem to remember googlig us army military markings and insignia or similar..give it a try you will find something relevent. good luck in the search and result.
Well I seem to have been talked into the possesion of one of these..It was in a part exchange deal..the only thing I dont like however is the vehicle is fitted with a 5.8 litre perkins deisel engine. which shakes and generally makes a huge amount of noise at any speed!...Plus its massive...
Seconded...(and) phew, that was really heavy going, plus Carnacs post hit the nail on the head with, "I concur with ALL that Jeepsinker said. I would only add that when posting a dissertation such as this, go back and re-read it twice to ensure clarity."
nice job. I have reversing lights and warning buzzers (switched on or off by dash switches) on all my trucks as an additional show parade or rally safety feature.)
With a journey of about 200 miles? if the truck is deemed to start run and drive properley..you should be good with taking most all of your usefull spanners (you own as a mecanic) Oils if the levels are ok and of recent change you could use any quality brand deisel engine oil. (I use a straight...
