How do you move your generator(s)?

I don't own much in the way of material handling equipment and have typically relied on my tilt-deck trailer and a small dolly with floor jacks to move stuff around. Recently I built a pair of towable dollys to improve my ability to shuffle generators. It got me curious how all of you move a...

Required spare parts to keep on hand for MEP 802/803

Thought of another one... Generator end bearing. These are 2 for $20 for quality Timken bearings. Good to have an extra on hand.

Required spare parts to keep on hand for MEP 802/803

Air filter, water separator, fuel filter, oil filter, belt, and an oil change's worth of oil, coolant. If you have serious outage, you may be running long enough to need filter changes. Fuel hose(s), spare fuel pump. (Did you upgrade your well nut yet?) All fuses, wire butt splices (I'm...

Yanmar L48AE Injector seal MEP 531/831

Hard to tell for sure, but that looks like a seal to me. (Part 18 )

    MEP-831A no power

    wow.

    Mep 802a start up

I recall hearing this, but I don't remember the reason. What happens when you idle down?

    Mep 802a start up

61 hz is fine. Unloaded, mine is around 61.5hz. There is an easy way to adjust droop on the engine if your set is sagging (hz) too much under load.

    Mep 802a start up

Still working on it, but Seafoam has done wonders cleaning up the crankcases of some other machines I have. I'd like to do a long 8 hr pull at 80% load to work it in.

    Mep 802a start up

What year is your unit and how many hrs? I have a low hour (218) 1994 model that behaves similar, in that it smokes some when a load is added, but burns clean after a few minutes of load. This isnt typical of my other units and it has led me to believe that the rings are a little stuck, so I...

    Using thicker oil

18 psi is really low. Unless its just the pressure relief, your engine is on borrowed time.

    I guess it's a LPW2, not a DN2M...

That sounds like a hidden gem!

    Using thicker oil

Rotella T1 30wt comes to mind. Readily available at box stores.

    Using thicker oil

Just make sure it's diesel rated 30wt, not gasoline. Diesel oil has more detergents and higher zinc.

    I guess it's a LPW2, not a DN2M...

    Did it look like this?

    I guess it's a LPW2, not a DN2M...

Confirmed, all markings on this engine are Lister Petter, no Onan marks anywhere. Gen is a 7/11 build. My next newest unit is a 12/09 build and it has Onan markings. Sidenote, but the fuel hose quality on these newer machines is terrible. The 2011 with 207 hrs was the worst, every line...

803a sustained load in high heat.

I thought about those numbers and realized what a tremendous amount of power you generated. At those load levels, 200 gallons burned would have generated 1700-1800 kWh of electricity in ~11 days of runtime. That is over 2 months worth of electricity for an average house in my area!

803a sustained load in high heat.

    Good update

    generator MEP802

Is your Dead Crank Switch in the "Normal" position before you move the master switch to "Prime and Run"?

803a sustained load in high heat.

Nice report. Any more detail on the smaller gens that died? Did they belong to people in your group? Were they 3600 rpm open frame generators? How did they die?

    I guess it's a LPW2, not a DN2M...

Thanks, I'm excited to get this one running. It's very clean, 100% complete, newer model, and only 200 hrs. Only thing I see wrong is the IP feed lines are falling apart, which is odd, but easy to fix.
