    wrecker bed differences

Oz Spare tyres n trailers I'm still researching Oz wreckers, but I'd assume that the trailers were "upgraded" along with the trucks (from the 60's multi to the 70's 816), probably the same manufacturer but not sure. As far as the "M" number, that is not an American trailer (I don't think) so...

    E-mail addresses of S/S members..

Understanding that e-mail addresses of S/S members are not available to the general masses only the site techno-nerds etc. Is there a a way that someone who hasn't posted in a couple of years, can be contacted on my behalf, with my question, for them to decide if they want to then contact me...

Welding on Deuce do i disconnect batteries?

Darn it - now I'll have to go research Eddy Currents..... But thanks Rustygears for the terminology correction. Another cautionary tip. Don't weld 'through' your vise - ie., ground on the welding table/bumper etc., and then the positive on the work piece in the vise jaws. This may cause the...

Extra tools and different BII for wreckers

Check garage/tag sales near army bases! Like Jeff said , there is also the stuff that actually dissapears from the BII itself as vehicles get upgraded, but the guys at the sharp end know it is good kit, so will move it over to the newer truck even if it isn't in the newer BII! When you find...

Welding on Deuce do i disconnect batteries?

Connect or disconnect, that is the question. Whether it be ..... I always disconnect alternator and battery/'ies, I was told to do so many many years ago, but can't remember why. (Something to do with solid state huge-a-ma-flips or something and bad grounds/power surges, eddy currents and...

    winch cable experts?

Well thanks for the research even though it makes me look like a complete monkeys armpity. I guess it was a tall tail, trying to impress me!

    wrecker bed differences

Sorry Jeff, this is all I have for now and excuse pics 3 and 4 - they are cut n pasted from a vid I found. And yes, the first two are multi fuels in Vietnam.

    winch cable experts?

Well Sigo, that's all I have. It was a discussion with a local heavy recovery operator - not sure if it may have come from a trade journal. I'd hate to think I was 'sold a plum' but I could quite imagine this happening - I've seen the plenty of safety vids/pics of old style construction...

    wrecker bed differences

For airfied recoveries (aircraft) I think it was the M127. Narrow 5th wheel, step deck. (The M816 had a Freuhoff tandem-duel, tilt bed pintle trailer when used by the Australian Army.)

    wrecker bed differences

It pays to look twice.. I looked closer at your pic #2, comments in margin.... Not convinced that the chain is for the welding bottles, it works fine for holding the open the locker lid, but I only have one on the same side as Jeff! Jeffs truck light bar (goal post frame) only uses 2...

    wrecker bed differences

Ah - in lieu of the gun ring supports that my beacon uses now. Thanks. Now, any ideas on the mud flap adjacent brackets.

    wrecker bed differences

Noticed/found some holes/brackets and wondered if anyone knew what they might have been for... Bracket aft of the rear mudflap (metal part) on the underside of the body - would work for full height rubber flaps if there weren't the two piece ones. 5 holes per side in the bulkhead...

    winch cable experts?

Agree with Doghead in that factory is always the safe bet, HOWEVER, since the manual was written, AND the then military budget dictated, there have been improvements in most technologies. The information IS out there. Cable ratings, bend radii, lubrication recommendations, termination...

    winch cable experts?

Yes it will work, of course. If you have a plain, open drum winch - you could use bailer twine... In theory! If it's a smaller diameter than factory AND you have a level wind, then the cable tensioner WILL NOT work, unless you move the fixed pulley OR increase the pulley wheels size to make up...

What have you done WITH your wrecker this week?

Yard repairs - need a lift. ... so, tractor dragged into yard by the shop, but with no steering, had to pick up the back and move onto level conc pad for stability whilst stripping down. Needed to use stabiliser legs as I wasn't comfortable lifting whilst the truck listed to starboard with...

    Snafu, good one.

So Snafu isn't SNAFU. ... nicely played, but are you sure you'll stick with that - I'd hate to do a poll of all the military personel I've ever met! I think my money would be on the "problem" side! :) But thats ok, I'll let it be at that. Thanks.

    Snafu, good one.

Mods have me confused... So, it's ok to say "S N A F U", but it's not ok to say "Eff'in' big wrench"....... Not trying to hijack thread, just trying to see 'where the line is' and why it's so darn grey.

What have you done WITH your wrecker this week?

Wrecker play time - or as my wife says "Your still trying to justify getting it aren't you?" You know the saying "I don't know what we did before we had ...... " (Insert as necessary - vacuum's, cell phones, microwaves, remote control TV's etc., etc. Now I can add 'wrecker'! ) Had a little...

    HEMTT M977 Tire Change

Don't really need a jack or axle stand, just run the other tandem up on big blocks 'til the flat one just floats in mid air - like the "ramps" they sell for those horsey types with the double axle trailer. Get a 3/4" or 1" drive impact on 3/4" hose from an air pig which can be fed from your...

    Replacing M936A1 Wrecker Hoist Cable

... and if you do get a PDF from Esmet, please shove it on S/S for all to see. I re-did the clevis on my front winch cable, wedge bent and nut damaged, did remove some of the fibre core to allow space for the wedge - seemed logical to me! Not sure of the purpose of the little hole - possibly a...
