All of the LDS turbo model numbers start with a "4" (ie. 4" frame): LDS427-2= 4D-454C. LDS-465-1= 4-456. LDS465-1A= 4LE-354. LDS465-2= 4LE-456. The LDT turbo model numbers start with a "3" (presumably, 3" frame). 3LD-305, 3LJ-319 (whistler), 3LM-39 (D).
In case anyone is curious about the sound of the different turbos... In order of increasing noise: 3LM-39 (aka D), 4LE-456 (LDS465-2), 4LE-354 (wastegate), and 3LJ-319 (aka C).
The 4LE-354 (wastegate) turbo achieved about 12 psi peak. I try not to run past ~1000°F and I don't take the rpm to the redline. The 4LE-456 didn't perform very well when used in this manner. The most boost I could get under the roughly the same conditions was ~8psi. Very little boost at...
I recall in other threads posts indicating that it is, in fact, a spray. I have not observed testing of one of these injectors in person; but I have a hard time believing that ~2kpsi through a tiny hole won't be a spray.
The LDT465-1C, LDS-465-1, and LDS465-1A have the same timing: 20°BTDC so no change has to be made if you already have an LDT. The naturally aspirated LD series are 25° BTDC and the highest horsepower version, the LDS465-2 is 22° BTDC.
It is really hard to say if it is still important. The continental literature claimed it was done to "eliminate the requirement for high additive oil to prevent excesssive ring groove carbon formation." Has anyone had ring sticking with modern oils? The piston bowl is cooled on all engines.
Here is another, perhaps more succinct explanation:
