I don't see spending about $4500 on 1150 gallons of fuel to drive that slow is something I can stand. Besides, having a crane on my 8x8 truck, I might be asked to fix or tow everything that breaks.
The painfully slow pace is one of the reasons I'm sitting on the fence on this trip. I don't want to drive anywhere at 25-30 mph unless the terrain is THAT difficult as to require it. All of Alaska's portion is supposed to be paved with some frost heaves in places and Canada's portion is...
They were used on all coral islands as the coral tore up tires, the metal tracks would hold up to the abrasiveness of the sharp coral. You notice it is for the Navy . . . used in the South Pacific.
On the first picture you can see the "X" with a circle around it but it is faded. A friend told me what that means: "dead, don't buy it for anything but parts."
BTW, when I was at Ft. Lewis a few months back ALL the trailer mounted generators had the "X" on 'em.

I wanted to come too but my truck is too new and it looked like space might have been too tight. At least we got the spare parts ready for above the garage storage.
I'm a lazy b@$tard, plus I want a simple one wire civilian alternator . . . hence the equalizer. A gold plated Mil Spec dual voltage unit might be cool but can you imagine changing one of those things out in BF Egypt and getting it fixed? I'd rather call NAPA and get another new one. Also...
Sure you did, LOTS of cheap ones:

I have the Michelin's on my HEMTT, they are noisy and at 5-10 mph you can feel the vibration from the blocks. That said, I still bought another set because I like the look better and if I want quiet, I just roll up the windows. :driver:
I want to but it is just too far out to tell. Going the 1650 miles to Tower Park and back next spring will be a test run for the 7000 miles the 2012 event will be for me. At 4mpg, the HEMTT is going to burn a LOT of fuel!
