Drained approximately 19 gallons of the nastiest smelling gas I’ve ever been around out of the Champ. Replaced that with 4 gallons of fresh gas, some Stabil, and a dose of Mechanic in a Bottle. At this point I am getting absolutely zero attempts at the engine firing. I pulled the plug from #1...
Well the HET and I are sitting at the gate (actually I’m at the gate and the HET is across the road since he doesn’t have room in front of the gate ;) )
Haggerty is not the only option but it’s against site rules to discuss insurance possibilities (specific companies) but several of the other collector companies offer excellent tow options. I had an $850 tow billed completely covered and they didn’t even ask why it needed towed.
So we rented Congo off Amazon tonight (ironic that they're 2 different jungles) and watched the entire thing. I saw a nice Unimog, tons of Land Rovers, a DC 3, and Jimmy Buffett, but no Champs. We rewound it to the point where they first landed in Africa (about 20 minutes in) and watched that...
I got some more information about the vehicles from the Champ Owners Club out of the UK:
This is the parts truck:
Chassis No: WN1-10239
Army Reg No: 02 BF 39
ENGINE-61965
Date in Service: 21 SEPTEMBER 1955
Receipt Voucher: FTM/R/3328/118 [21 BVD FELTHAM]
S/O: RUDDINGTON 6 AUGUST 1965 [EX...
One of the issues is unloading, pulling the engine, and reloading the spare on the trailer. Both the wife and HOA don't want it in the driveway and it was loaded by lifting the front with a forklift while I backed the trailer under it then lifting the rear with same forklift and pushing it on...
Well I got the Champ running - for about 15 seconds. I think there's a minor fuel delivery problem that should be easy to remedy but the one of the batteries wasn't strong enough to crank more than a couple of times. While the fuel pump is 12v the starter is still 24v so I need to get it...
Check with you actual insurance company rather than a 3rd party vendor like AAA. I have collector's insurance on my LMTV that includes Roadside Assistance. I had to have it towed nearly 100 miles when the fan clutch exploded and they told me I was actually good for 200 miles from home. That...
It appears that many of the Austin owners on here are either current or former Gama Goat owners as well. It's something about being an oddball or so danged ugly they're cute (that's the only way I found a wife).
I have a NOS 24v headlight $25 but you’ll have to pick it up. I won’t ship something like this because I don’t want it broken and both of us be out. I’m just north of hwy 46/281 intersection above Bulverde.
Pretty much what I thought just concerned if it wasn't actually that. Yakima gets ****ed hot in the summer and ****ed cold in the winter. That’s why I hated going there from Ft Lewis. It was basically a mini NTC.
I'm still going to try and start it. I need to drain the old fuel out of the tank but thinking of giving it a spin off a gas can once the batteries are charged. I'm already looking for a rebuild kit but that's going to have to come from England if one's available.
If it starts I might just go...
A little paint would probably hide it pretty good. I had already promised the parts truck to someone else so hate to take that back. Plus the wife didn't want me putting any money into this so getting an engine rebuilt would really screw that up.
Well if you ever wondered how car salesmen got there reputation here’s a prime example. On further inspection of the “runner’s” block it’s obviously cracked.
Problem is if you hit something solid you’re just going to bend the aluminum where they’re mounted. Really should be attached to the frame for real protection.
