The diff lock on the 6X6's get the air source from the same source as the fan, so I'd start there.

You can interchange the thermal protected starter with the non-thermal. If you are replacing the thermal one with a non you need to wire out the switch that isn't there.

The rear axle and alternator are 2007 model year or newer.

That's not a bad price for two trucks.. If you can part out the big ticket items (engine, trans, axles) those parts should fetch at least what you paid, and then some so getting your money back as a last resort shouldn't be a problem.
