Checking the tools made for the project.
This weekend I took the cover of my front axle to verify if my aluminum blocks I made last weekend were going to work prior to disassembling the front hubs. They need to be milled down on the sides to work correctly. The blocks I have are to wide to bolt...
I was thinking for the seal drivers I could always use 3/4" plywood and cut out the correct size and then use a solid 1"/3" steel dowel center on the top of that to tap the seal in. Most likely I will measure the diameter of the outside of the seals today and pick up some pre-cut metal circles...
Fabricated front axle tools
Fabricated up some tools to use on my front axle next weekend. I will try to check the clearance next weekend, and add the correct shims to see if that cures the excess gear noise in the front axle around 30-40 mph when I left off the throttle and the spiders are not...
M1078 Bed Crane - first use
Installed the Dutton Lainson winch tto the hoist today. Need to set up permanent wiring under the frame and come up into the bed. Here are a few photos of lifting a HEMTT front cab mount (250 lbs) that I need to deliver to one of my friends once I finish the...
Excellent job on the brackets. What is the tool you are using on the holes to flare them inward. You have all the cool tools to make everything look very professional customized :)
Awesomeness, I think it would be a great idea for you to build the crane to remove your own engine. That way the money you save from not renting a engine crane can build a crane that you can use for many other projects in the future. You would need a slightly longer horizontal extension, and I...
Winch arrives
Winch showed up today. I will work on installing the winch onto the crane this weekend. Also I am going to run 1/0 cable to the back with a quick connector, so it can be used for the crane, or a rear winch in the near future. Here are a few photos of it after taking it out of the...
I would like to have that one, but also think I need the 5 ton to go along with the crane :) Maybe it is in my future if I sell my M1078 I would like a 5 ton tractor, and then add the crane and a removable bed that attaches to container locks.
I was thinking just put it in my chop saw, and cut in half and put the new sleeve between the two pieces and tack weld it back in place. But can also do it the way expeditionnw suggested.
M1078 Front axle hub bearings.
Here are the part numbers for the Timken bearings that I received in the kit I bought. I still have not found a cover to modify like Steve, so I may try just using (4) U-joint clamp brackets (modified) to hold the cross T section for the spider gears in place to...
Front Axle hub rebuild parts - 1995 M-1078
Here are the parts I bought for the front axle rebuild. I will post photos of the part numbers for the NAPA bearings later. But the NAPA bearings cost around $160 and the kit on the large auction site was around $65. The socket from Fleet pride was...
Thanks, if I was a professional welder with a shop these would be very easy to knock out. Best for most people would be to cut all the steel, and then bring it down to their local certified welder and have them just make the welds. I think that would result in a significant cost savings. I could...
CMPPhil, great job with the crane on your truck, and thanks for the information. That is a cool looking military truck. I definitely am after making my truck as useful as possible. I will be lifting a welder up into my truck when I need to work remotely, and do not want the winch to give out...
The center section is off of a M925 tire davit, that I use for rotating the crane. I had to use 3 1/2"tube sleeves inside the square tube so the round tube would be a tight fit, and could be welded in place. The gap is left for the placement of a roller bearing in the future. I will then weld a...
