When you unbolt the rear hub cover, the axle is attached and comes right out. There 'should be' little or no oil at the hub because your rear wheel bearings are greased bearings not oiled. You do need an axle cut for a rear lock out, but more than that I can't tell ya. Best bet is to contact...

here's my .02... 2deuce, I pulled both axles out of my front-back rear to help free up the tandems while highway driving, and it made a big difference. If you do go that route though, you'll still need to be able to lock your front axle in at times when the rears loose traction going over...
