That was the route I went when I needed to replace mine. Yes it costs more but it is plug&play so to speak and no doubt it was configured for the intended use.
Also the magnetic coupling can fail. Thats what killed my pump. The magnet is glued into a cup on the bottom of the motor. The glue failed and allowed the magnet to dislodge from the cup which brought the hole show to a stop. If the pump you received was New OLD Stock it is possible that glue...

You are most likely starved for fuel because of the lack of volume. The TM says any pressure above 4psi is good. Assuming the pumps you have there are even working the hose...
Like others have said the truck should run fine without the intank pump running. I only found mine was inop because I changed the filters and went to purge them and nada, nothing. Truck was running great.
So far I haven't found any warnings in the TM's about not running it this way. I know that some cooling system designs will not flow correctly if the thermostat is removed due to the fact the body of the thermostat makes up part of the coolant passage. There is a thermostat test listed in TM...
