    B17G Flying Fortress

There is no sweeter sound then those big radials at full song. Got to climb in one years ago. Really gives you a reality check of what the men endured that flew these aircraft.

    deuce starter relay

99.98% of the time they have the same tag number. There seem to be a couple that do change from one end to the other. As far as I can see none to do with the starter circuit. The master switch acting up could have to do with a large current draw sense it feeds the starter button.

    Exhaust note changed?

Well I stand corrected. I am surprised that the radial clearance is that much. We never really checked it using any kind of measuring tool. Just went by feel. If you could move the compressor or turbine wheel (depending if you had the intake or exhaust side off) back and forth ever so slightly...

    Exhaust note changed?

:ditto: what m16ty said. A small amount of end play is normal 3~4 thousands. Any radial play, side to side or up and down is indication of bearing failure. If any wet area is noticed on the compressor side it would indicate seal failure and a chance to have a run away condition.

    Exhaust note changed?

Might be a bad turbo bearing. They can start to make noise under load without a total failure. Most of the time if you burn a valve you pickup a miss more than a noise. Also check that there are no splits or cracks or loose clamps on the intake boots from the air cleaner to the turbo inlet. They...

Trans stuck in first gear but shifter moves

According to the manual it might be something as simple as a loose setscrew allowing the shift rail to slide through the shift fork without moving it. TM 9-2520-246-34-1, page 2-85. Hope this helps.

    deuce starter relay

Sounds like someone has tried bypassing the relay. I can't imagine that working very well sense it would most likely burn out the starter switch or wiring because it would be drawing a lot more amps than it was ever designed to handle. That's why the relay was there in the first place. Of course...

Got insurance and tags in MD finally

Ok. Thanks for the info. I'm no expert but most of the time you can't use a organizational tag in place of a weight or historic tag.

    deuce starter relay

Well I'm at a loss. Not sure what to tell you at this point. Would you be able to post a picture of the area around the starter. Maybe something will give us a clue as to how it is wired in your instance.

That would be correct. I did the antique plates because no inspection and I didn't plan on doing any hauling. Just pleasure driving.

You do have a point there. I need to start getting more road time once I get the brakes, seals and bearings done. I will admit that the deuce has been kind of a yard decoration lately.

Congratulations. [thumbzup] I went the same way, with a commercial policy. Cost more but I had verified the restriction on use, mileage and storage with the less expensive options and didn't like them. So I guess I'll start seeing a deuce running around the shore now.
