Here is a good PDF on the subject of switching neutral, and some of the reasons to switch or not to switch it. http://www.kraftpower.com/pdfs/KPC_Info_05_switching_neutral.pdf
I'm sure I could also look up similar references in the current NEC code book (but one would need to know what level...
I'd totally rewire that (manual) transfer switch. The wire sizes are way too small (much looks like 12 AWG!) and as well, like Ike mentions switched neutral is not good. I'm sure the wire is too small a gauge to properly fit the terminals on that switch (or the breaker panel) as well. All...
Actually you check for shorted turns in a coil with a 'growler' not a megger. But that device is also not commonly found in must 'home' shops--usually only someone who is doing motor/generator work has one. It consists of a V shaped iron core with an electromagnet wound on it. The coil is...
For the lower hose: CarQuest 20611, you'll need two of them and a short (perhaps 3 inch long) piece of pipe or a nipple (pipe that is threaded) and four hose clamps. The hoses are slightly longer than needed, you'll end up trimming off about an inch or two from the ends, it probably took me...
On my MEP-004, I ended up fabricating a lower hose from two generic 90 degree hoses and a short (3 inch) steel plumbing pipe. Wasn't that expensive, and the hoses were in stock at the local CarQuest, the pipe I got at the hardware store across the street.
Except for the hose clamps in the...
I'll add to my notes that the CarQuest filter doesn't fit the 006... Sorry for the confusion, some of the filters are compatible, and it appears some are not!
Generally the breakers, when pulled out, are off (open circuit) and pushed in are on (closed). And generally the circuit breaker disconnects everything from the battery and can (on the MEP-004) be used as an emergency shutoff, since it removes the DC power from the circuit that energizes the...
My MEP-004 is clockwise, and the manual does mention that it is not a problem to rotate it either direction however. I use either a ratchet or breaker bar and a socket on the crank pulley, not difficult to turn it over.
Good idea on checking the engine to ensure it is not locked up... Mine...
I posted the CarQuest numbers for fuel and oil filters the other day in another thread. AFAIK, the 004, 005 and 006 all use the same filter(s). I suppose we should start working on a Wiki for each of these, and include a cross-reference section too.
If Westech can provide a Wix number, CarQuest...
To flip the lunette eye (is that spelled right?) you remove the big nut then pull the eye out. Oh, guess what, it is a tapered and tight fit! I used a high-lift jack on the rear (put the nut on until it was even with the end of the threads to protect the threads, then the jack to the trailer's...
I have my MEP-004 run into a customized transfer switch. The switch was originally 6 circuits off a standard 240/120 volt generator setup. I changed it to be 3 sets of two circuits for three phase. The conversion process was trivial, a few new wires, and a proper three phase plug to replace the...
You could pull some 120/208 off to get single phase if you needed, but if you are fully loading with the equipment you are describing then you may not get a lot of spare power from a 004. A MEP-004 is rated at about 52 amps per phase, so at maximum load you'd be slightly over the book rating...
Actually at 208 volts, the current will do down, not up. Ohm's law applies here.
To the original post, if the genset is setup at 120/208 volts (as most are) you can run one side as a 120/208 and the spare leg (which is 120 volts, not 208 ) can be used to feed some additional circuits without a...
OK, managed to remember to check my ether cylinder. As I recalled, it is exactly the same size as a propane torch bottle, both diameter and height. The threads looked visually the same as well, though I didn't try to screw a torch head on my ether cylinder as I didn't want to take a chance of...
You have three choices. In order of ease in implementing:
1. Use two phases, and derate to 10 KW. Many do this, and despite what some say, it won't harm the generator set.
2. Wire your transfer switch to make it work with three phases. This requires a special transfer switch. I've seen them...
OK, without reading a few more followup posts, in page 2, I will go out later today and write the numbers and info off my ether bottle. It is a commercial product (as mentioned they are used on semi's) and I'm sure the number will cross-reference. It is virtually identical to a propane cylinder...
The ether can's got ether in it right, and pressure?
Was that a cold start, or was it already warmed up? Seemed to be running very clean. (Didn't listen to the audio as my wife is watching tv next to me...) And what was the temp out on that startup? :?
If that is the specifications, then...
Two of these, wired in series (to get above the 75 volt specification) would work for a test if nothing else. 100µF 50V 20% Radial-lead Electrolytic Capacitor - RadioShack.com
Just watch the polarity when you wire them up.
I've also seen strange things with fuses that seemed good, and were not. I always try to test by replacing (was taught that in the military!) and not testing. Some people look at a fuse and say "it is good" as if a visual inspection tells them something--not a chance, I've seen so many that were...
