Here is my take on the situation. You trusted your fuel gauge and the it lied to you. You ran out of fuel and now you have air in the system. Without removing the air it will crank all day long and never start. It is well documented on how to bleed the system. There are even some videos...

Glad you got it running. Good job [thumbzup] Like I said rebuilding the selector valve isn't hard just time consuming. Hardest part is getting all the other parts out of the way. Compressed and dried out orings can sure make a truck run bad. Amazing how a simple item can deadline a truck.

The majority of the time the fusible links the blow when you remove the battery cables for a starter run on are the blue 12ga. Fusible links and fuses do two similar but different jobs.
