I put the BFG Baja's on and installed my Lightforce Lights on the GMV this weekend.
I also installed my "center console" - a painted Coke crate with my modified ammo can.
No worries at all. I've done my time as well and have seen all sorts of stupid things during the course of my enlistment. The fact that you did 20 should mean that you've seen considerably more stupid stuff.
Someone put a note on it regarding a revised capacity versus actually being concerned...
This weekend a friend and I attempted to knock out a portion of the "GA Traverse". It's an interconnecting network of forest service and logging roads about 400 miles long that crosses north GA. It starts near Seneca, SC and ends just over the Alabama/GA line. This trip was straight-up awesome...
That "little piece of metal" supports the weight of the turret and allows you to mount the various hardware to it, so it's kinda critical.
I've seen them cheaper on ebay frequently......
You don't need to be a "wrench" for basic maintenance tasks like changing brake pads. That's why there are TM's. They're written so that 18 year old kids can do this stuff - and sometimes not the brightest ones at that.

Thank you for the insightful comment. I've also read several times throughout this thread of where people had issues with soft paint, or paint running if rained on, etc before curing. It's a question worth asking.
