You will most likely find that your truck actually stops better with this trailer attached. Mine sure does. If working properly the brakes on these trailers are awesome. And yes, it can be towed without brakes.

No no, I'm betting you can just pull the shifter boot up and tighten the bolt/nut.

Oven cleaner will work to remove that paint. Spray it, let it sit until the paint is bubbling off, then hose it off. Works just like aircraft paint stripper.

The shifter shaft clamping bolt is more than likely loose and causing the slop.

Just don't beat on the threads when you do the lunette.

Agreed. Years of being a mechanic has shown me that the ten bolt is indeed junk. Don't forget that they also like to just drop teeth off of the ring and pinion gears for no reason. Poor heat treat once again.
