    Fuel

One thing not noted in these talks is the injection pump and injectors are "hardened" for use with Arctic fuel, which has very little lubricating ability. That would indicate the use of WMO isn't necessary for that function. Stretching your fuel ration is another story, tho. Another thing the...

    Deuce Rough Terrain Limitations

From a personal point of view, the huge amount of automotive engineering that went into the 50's fleet of tacticals paid us taxpayers great dividends. Look how long they were in front-line service, compared to the last few years with many new designs that are being phased out without getting...

    Deuce Rough Terrain Limitations

The late 40's/early 50's Test & Evaluation Command gave us heavy tacticals in several wheelbases, i.e. the tractor/dump, the standard cargo, the long wheelbase cargo/extended van in both the 2.5 & 5-ton series. This included the sealed 24V electrical systems with lots of commonality among...

    Deuce Rough Terrain Limitations

I taught classes in the base library at the YPG back in the 70's. Access to many reports on tactical vehicle testing was available, and I was really into army trucks. I couldn't take any of the material out of the facility, unfortunately. Another thing I remembered was one report said tire...

    Deuce Rough Terrain Limitations

Military proving ground testing back in the 50's found that in every case, super singles were superior to duals in off-road mobility. That is the reason there were SS 2.5 & 5-tons built with them, like the M34. In later years, most operations were highway routes, and duals were better handling...

What am I doing wrong? Why does my ignition start switch handle not line up?

Might be for the M809 series 5-tons, they have an Off-On-Start switch.

    Wiring help, seeking wisdom

Yep. Tho it was usually done by just changing out the entire taillight.

    Wiring help, seeking wisdom

Early M37's only had one stop/tail on the left. BO stop/marker on the right. Later trucks had two stop/turn/tail, with an additional housing like the front BO's on a Jeep.

Need a sample Humvee VIN number.

^ This. The first ones I saw were at the Yuma Proving Grounds. One from Teledyne, one I can't remember who built it, and the AM General with the Deutz air-cooled Diesel. That was in the early 80's.

    Possible re-invention of the Wheel

That large Schrader stem is popular on lots of ag equipment. I've seen tire chucks for that use at our real tire store.

    Possible re-invention of the Wheel

Yep. Simple enuf, a flap & radial tube.

Need a sample Humvee VIN number.

I had a boatload of fun with a very early test fleet HUMVEE serial number 24, a TOW missile carrier. M1024? Back in '84 one didn't see many in private hands back then, Ahnold had one of that fleet as well. 11 months work to get it roadworthy, lots of $ in parts. Since it wasn't mine, I...

    Possible re-invention of the Wheel

CTIS was the answer to leaky wheels on late tacticals. Drive by a guard base and see a lot of trucks listing this way and that, waiting to be started up to set level. The off-road benefit can be useful, but 95% of where you might drive will get you by with highway-pressure in your tires. I...

    Backfiring

The batteries need to be the same, for if one has a different Ampere-hour rating, it will cause one to charge over 12V and the other will never charge up properly.

    Backfiring

Where gas gets into the oil it means your stock fuel pump diaphragm has failed. Either age or the new gas eats it up. This is why many, many have gone to an electric pump back by the gas by the gas tank to push the gas rather than pull it. This really cuts down on vapor locking as well.

    Backfiring

No. The filter element is not expensive, NAPA has them.

    Backfiring

Never was a "ballast resistor" on the firewall. If the is a box inline with the distributor cable, it is a radio interference suppressor. Those seldom give any trouble, and were only used on the very early production. Just about every M37 out there has the newer distributor with the...

Pretty sure I got (not) scammed by a eBay seller from Japan selling radios

Since eBay instituted their new funds system for sellers, the $ goes into an escrow account regardless of source and is only disbursed to the seller if things go right. I sell occasionally there and it works just fine, just not if you need quick cash.
