Locking hubs on deuces and up.

When locking hubs are installed on a deuce or larger, are there any additional lube considerations? i.e. Gear lube, wheel bearing grease or special additive to keep the hub alive when in freewheel position?

    800 Series questions

RE: Question As far as the winch question goes; Most all of the M series trucks will show as w/wo winch in the descriptions as they were all designed to be equipped with one. A winch "kit" should be the winch and mounts, frame extensions to space out the front bumper, PTO and PTO shaft, maybe...

    Solargizer Placement

Neat thing about solar cells is that while they work best in full sun, they all create power to a lesser or greater degree in all kinds of daylight. Facing the sky is our only criteria.

    800 series brake conversion

Do you know which axles you have? If they're the same as the M900 series trucks the backing plates should bolt right on. If not, swapping axles might be the fastest although no necessarily the cheapest. Remember too that you'll have to get an E-7 treadle valve (brake pedal assy), relay valve and...

    Turbos power question

RE: Thanks for info on the turbo My turbo sources say the "C"s were replaced by the "D"s 'cause the "D" put out more air to cut down on emissions, pure and simple. Military's choice had nothing to do with power output. (Don't remember ever seeing 1/4 mile times listed in any TM's spec. sheets)...

What to check on a Pinz?

Since everything on a Pinz is hydraulically operated, I'd look carefully for leaks. Also any boots protecting flexible joints. This may have changed but when I was playing with them, Steyr was going around to all the surplus auctions in Europe and buying up parts and pieces so they could stay as...

    "Stealth" Muffler for a Deuce?

www.patriotexhaust.com (in their online muffler catalog, pg. #21) shows inserts that might be a consideration. Standard inserts are fiberglass cloth wrapped and they also have an "auger" insert without the glass wrap. 11 or 12 inches long and can be stacked in multiples for more or less sound...

    De Splining drive flanges

They should be machined out and a bushing put in to carry the ends of the axles so that the splines aren't damaged by running steel against steel. Also, when they're bored out to accept a bushing, the walls of the splined boss inside the drive flange get thin enough to need to be reinforced with...

Project Baby Hemmt - FOR LEONARD

Gary, come on anytime. I'd recommend the south face as it gets the morning sun which melts away the frost first. As far as a log?!? Well sure... I guess. Log, boulder, backpack full of pea gravel... anything you want to pack along to aid in your descent. M1075, You're right on the singles...

Project Baby Hemmt - FOR LEONARD

Hey Gary, good to hear from you. I fired the engine with the help of a spider web of fuel delivery and return lines, coolant hoses and enough jumper wires to re-string a biplane. Quite a growler with only 6' of straight pipe between the turbo and exhaust flapper. Methinks a muffler is in it's...

    Axle vents and off roading

I'm mounting the vents for the baby HEMTT high on the outside of the bed headboard. My only tip would be to make sure the connecting tubing always runs uphill. That way, any fumes that condense into oil/gear lube will run back into the gearcase and not puddle and congeal into a plug. Same way...

Project Baby Hemmt - FOR LEONARD

Well, somebody has to perform these experiments, but why do I feel like a test pilot in a kamakazi factory? OK everyone, here's how it goes. 1600X20s DO NOT lend themselves to being set up as duals. They rapidly approach the maximum width of 110" and all that weight has to add up to some...

Project Baby Hemmt - FOR LEONARD

RE: Dueling 1600s... some things just ain Bjorn, the tires are Michelin XZL 1600R20 and the sidewall marking says they're good for 14,540# at 110 psi. That should work out to ohh, 58,160# for the rear dualled out... that's 29.08 tons. Yep, I can go ahead and haul that load of garden mulch...

Project Baby Hemmt - FOR LEONARD

Dueling 1600s... some things just ain't meant to be. To Kenny, et. al.; Well, after moving the center out on one of my 1000X20 rims, mounting up an extra 1600X20 Michelin and straining myself to the point where only dogs can hear my speaking voice... I'm here to tell you that dualed out 1600s...

Stencils, solar charger & gas tank mounts

Before you start tearing out your hair just remember; a lot of GIs in the field have the same problem. Don't over-restore is what I was once told and it seems true especially if "authenticity" is your goal. Most stuff in the field doesn't look like it's museum-grade, they just look like working...

    Rockwell torque.........somebody knows

Sorry about the snapped bolt. I looked again in another -34 (TM 9-2320-361-34), adobe reader page 250 of 776 and it's saying 116 to 149 ft/lbs... quite a spread from 300. The -34s are where disassemby, repair, and reassembly stuff is covered.

    Rockwell torque.........somebody knows

TM 9-2320-209-34-2-1, Chap. 10 gives the re-assembly stuff. Manual page 10-90 (adobe reader page 490 of 772) doesn't have carrier torque specs., just tight and then to the line-up of the safety wire holes. Page 10-95 (adobe reader page 496 of 772) gives torque on the cap bolts as 300ft/lbs. Read...
