That is part of the radiator, you need to go look again ,carefully. Those are the "fins" that are between the rows of tubes. It's gonna keep peeling out.
The engine in the M800 series in an OLD design, like from the early 70's. Cummins went to the "Big Cam " in around 1980 or so. The Small Cam was only used in the military trucks and some industrial applications after that. The industrial aps stopped when off road emissions advanced. Dunno why...
Ditto on the bucket full of fuel. Start it and let it sit. If the fuel bleeds back to the bucket, you have failed front seals. If it starts right up, there are issues on the truck.
Looks good! Sooo...next desert trip?
You would be surprised how well they work. M998junkie's truck walked right up the shale road up to the mine. His is still a "tractor" with no wt. over the rears and the road was steep enough it you almost couldn't walk up it.

More pics to follow as I get started on it in a few days.
Well, didn't see a halftrack forum, figured this would be the best place to start this.
A guy that knows Craig...the Museum Curator..has a halftrack. An M3A1. A USN Cheif and Mine Man . He drove the Pee Pee out of it. I think a bit of too much driving and not enough maintenence took it's...

What does it smell like, oil or fuel? Oil, could be a turbo. Fuel, could just be from not working it or plugged filters. Plugged filters can have so much restriction across them that the fuel is actually pulled apart making air bubbles. That in turn changes the injection timing due to the pump...
