I ran the DT466 up the flagpole here some time ago and started a lot of rantings about it not being as good an engine as the multiflop.

A friend used a group 24 and a group 27 in an M37. They didn't last out the year, had a 7 volt and a 17 volt at the end. It can get you by, but don't expect them to go for long.

The filters in the big tacticals will last a very, very long time. Typical is about 50,000 miles without changing depending on the dust conditions in your area.
Not many of us will ever get close to that figure, and the truck does have a very good indicator for restriction on the dashboard...
I hardly ever tow with the crane. It is much better to use the truck's 34K pounds to boss whatever around in a flat tow with a good towbar.
The crane is tops for motor work, loading stuff, putting big rafters up.

Out here that is SOP. Everything at the proving grounds is white on top. Imagine spending a day in a M113 on the range popping mines with a long probe while it is 120 deg outside.

This is not the same as the 5-ton or the 2.5 ton Reo.

The Reo used both a mechanical linkage for the sprags, or positive lock with an air piston and no sprags.

The G749 trucks use a sprag-type coupling much the same as the early Reo G742.
The unit is told which direction to turn via a rod from the automatic transmission selector. It may be out of adjustment, stuck, or the sprag itself bad.

You transmissions would be the correct one for use with the multi. The rest would be fairly simple, with the front motor mounting plate being different. The fuel system would need an axternal supply pump, and the installation of a return line to the tank. The wiring would be very similar...

You DO NOT want a newer truck on paper. Anything from '66 on will have to be smogged if you live in an attainment area. That is tough to do, most multiflops won't pass. Insurance is higher. You cannot get historic plates and automatic DOT...

Unfortunately you can't do it. The OD in the '53 is achieved by turning the countershaft faster, hence the input shafts are different. the gear in it is part of it so you can't change it out.

Keep in mind you can go on in the event of filter plugging with an empty cannister, not with a spin on.
Cannister filters are cheaper.
You can burn them in a barrel to almost nothing, whreas a spin on goes into a landfill (usually illegally) forever and soaks into the aquifer.

Ol' Jimmy Rachek is a piece of work. He owns BTP. I have dealt with him for years, and at least he is always the same.

A tip: Use Gillespie for the 383 base coat, and if you are indeed doing the 3-color MERDEC camo pattern, put the brown and black on using Behr exterior stain from Home Despot. (pun intended)
The Russet Brown and Ebony Black are perfect matches, tougher than hell, and thin with H2O.
