The waste gate is simply spring loaded, you can pull the rod towards the rear and it should spring back, I cannot hear mine at all except idling cold, but then again I have moderate to severe hearing loss.

Sounds pretty normal to me, the waste gate is so simple I doubt any have ever failed unless they fell apart.

40s may do OK on a de-armored truck that is already sitting at the "top" of its suspension, on a M998 you may have problems, 42s will definately tear off the fenders do a body lift there just is not enough suspension travel to "jack it up" and things get all wonky anyway.

I don't think everyone thinks 42s look cool, if you have a 4L80 you already have overdrive, but if you have a turbo and the 307 gears bigger tires are about your only choice besides new diffs.

Interestingly enough the only difference between the 5 speed Allison 1000 and the 6 speed is the valve body, seems you can mix and match the clutch pack application for different ratios. If you have an earlier GM with the Dmax and a 5 speed about $2200 (10 year old price) for a new valve body...
