I don't understand where folks got the idea that non-detergent is appropriate for any modern engine (1950+). The Chevy, GMC, and REO owners manuals from the fifies all state that detergent oil is recommended.
The 51970XE filter is a combined full flow/ bypass filter with a nominal 5 micron rating. Convert to a spin on filter with this and you don't have to mess with an extra bypass filter.
10psi/ 1krpm is probably OK for an SBC with tight bearing clearances. However, I wouldn't assume that is is OK for every engine and I certainly wouldn't apply that very rough rule of thumb to an engine which normallly has much higher pressure. If your oil pressure is low, there is a reason...
My sealed power catalog lists two military standard engines: 427 and 478. I am assuming that these are the multifuels.
Rod bearing is 3355CP available in std, 10, 20, and 30. Standard shaft size is 2.9970/ 2.9980", housing bore is 3.2510/ 3.2520, oil clearance is 0.0022/ 0.0052", max wall...
I think that you'd be fine if you raised the compression to 7.5 or 8:1. There was a later "OA331" with 7.5:1 compression known as the 6-170/ OH170. It had 170HP at 3400rpm and 297ft lb at 1600rpm.
I think that Sarafan had the best prices for piston/ sleeve kits (~$80). There was an LPG version of the OA331 which had ~8.0:1 compression. It'd be pretty hard to find by now.
I am working on replacing my OA331 with a rebuilt OH200 which is a later model redesigned and improved 400 cubic...
Lee, you are mostly correct. However, horsepower (and therefore torque combined with rpm) is required for any work. Accelerating or maintaining speed both require horsepower.
I am an electrical engineer, so I like to use electrical analogies. One horsepower equals 746 watts. Voltage and current can be compared to rpm and torque. When someone says that torque is more important it is equivalent to saying amps (or volts) is more important. One correction to your...
Most diesels last hundreds of thousands of miles on "compromise" 15W40 oil. Delivery trucks have dozens of "dry starts" daily and still seem to last. I think that the "dry start" is being blown out of proportion. The bearings ride on a wedge of oil which doesn't establish until the engine is...
Jim, The pressure on the back of the valve is a legitimate concern but the area of a circle (valve head) is actually pi*Radius^2. The circumference is pi*diameter. You should also subtract the area of the valve stem (pi*valve stem radius^2) when calculating the force on the valve.
The early chevy/ gmc block/bellhousing bolt pattern is different than the SBC/BBC/ late model six. However, I do remember reading about someone who mated a 454 to the original hydramatic.
