For the engine- Keep your eyes peeled for steals and parts trucks. Or find someone that is doing an engine upgrade (to a diesel or 251 etc...) and see if they'll sell/give/trade you their 230.
Electrical- Stay 24 volt. It was designed to be this way, and thus will operate the best that way...
Yeah, what needs fixin'? I don't know much about deuces specifically, but I've been working on trucks and tractors for my whole life and would sure be glad one weekend to take the 30 minute drive and do some work!

My advice (from a learner with military manuals) is to learn how to double clutch, and only double clutch. Unnecessary, some will say, but you never know when you'll need it. And as far as down shifting goes, on most trucks you'll have to double clutch regardless of wear or synchromesh.
