Do not use dull twist drills. Many metals will harden right in front of the dull drill producing the heat.
It is not good to just push harder as in the end that will slow the job down and cost more $.
This is about plow steel, 4140 but does apply here to answer questions.

Are you drilling freehand with portable or a drill press or a portable magnetic drill press?
Are you using Morse taper twist drills or a chuck with Silver and Deming type twist drills?
