Definite grounding problem. Another fix is LED headlamps. That takes a huge load off the light circuit. I just converted all the plow trucks to LED headlamps for the snow plows. It made the entire lighting system brighter and with less amperage use. I have all my personal CUCV's fitted with...
Those tags end up in the trash when a hack does a front oil change.
Or when you live in the north east and the tag rusts to dust right before the engine oil pan and rear differential cover rust thru. I had a Dana 60 axle that was used thru at the casting a few years back. Rust never rest. I...
You can weld it fast. You will never need to remove it in this life time. But if you did you can use a die grinder and cut the welds. You could weld flange nuts. They would work. But welding would be the same and stronger. That flange is salvageable but welding would be more labor effective...
Fuel leaks out on CUCV's fuel filters, worn line and throttle shaft seals. They do leak fuel. it will be replaced by air. But fuel does leak out. Stock is just easier to use the books to diagnose. Unless like me I have no books. Just experience. Good Luck with the AG unit.
Grind it so it fits flush and square. It is NOT critical on the clocking. If it is tight and flush,. Nail it. It will work. it is not rocket science. Just an old drum brake. make sure you have good welds no chicken crap will work. Good Luck. You can do it. Use bolts to get it tight and weld it...
I see nothing that a skilled welder could not repair in an hour or 2. That is all you need. Worse case scenario. Weld the backing plate to the axle. It will do the same thing and still be removable if the need be. But why would you need to? Don't fret take it to a weld shop. If you were closer I...
GOOD. Try and keep it that way. It works well for many others including myself. It makes it easier to help diagnose and repair from afar via the internet. Other wise too many variables. I know first hand the stock system works well when maintained. Same as changing it. It will still require...
Check for wet or dampness around the fuel filter or at the throttle shaft seals on the injection pump. That could allow a fuel drop situation. It will start and then shut off till you re-prime the fuel system. It may have nothing to do with the glow plugs. I still run 13G glow plugs in all my...
I just keep using the warranty. They last a couple years and I lost track of which ones I changed and which ones I did't change. I now have 2 new ones from old parts. I put a brand new GM one on and it lasted a few weeks and washed endlessly. So I am not sure what the answer is. I am so good at...
Oil pressure is driven from the cam shaft in the rear of the engine. It uses the same rod/shaft as the vacuum pump. All is well. Driving it a year without them must have been interesting. Black out on and no heat. How often did the batteries need charged? Cold starts and the injection pump would...
They probably didn't drive it thru a swamp and then pressure wash the engine and then drive it under water. Mine still works and I have done all of that and then some. I have had a few that like to wash until they are out of fluid. Clean freaks they are. That old set up is not as good as the...
Are the rear drums is great shape? many are bell shaped at this point and get grabby when new shoes are introduced to the rear drums. Also was the rear drums saturated with gear oil and did you replace the axle seals while you were rebuilding the brake system. I doubt proportioning valve. I...
Simpler yet. Get another truck that has all the good towing equipment, power and gets the job done. At 30+ years old these CUCV's would need a complete redesign to accomplish what the newer lighter trucks are doing in stock form with more safety and efficiency. I used to have a CUCV as my only...
Rusty I am always glad you are here to clear the air with these transmission issues. They are not one of my stronger points. But I sure appreciate your input on these matters. I use all my CUCV's stock and over the course of 20+ years of CUCV ownership. I have learned what they are good for and...
Does your front differential have a 60 embossed on the ear flange of the front differential? And the limited slip will be determined by removing the cover plate and looking inside if it has a clutch pack inside. Check it out and send a few pictures our way. But the big 60 in the casting is a...
I tend to agree. I very much dislike towing heavy over a long distance with a CUCV. I have done it coast to coast several times. But it is very tiring and will be the most uncomfortable trip you ever will make. I tow a lot of wood locally and with a 10 X 6 trailer with 24" sides. It kills the...
I have never primed the pump. Other then disconnecting the 12v wire from the injection pump and cranking over the engine a bit. Seems to have worked out well for me. If you crank it the oil light will go off. I was told that if the oil light stays off a bit afterwards while not cranking that...
