Funny but the axle vent that is there holds a small amount of pressure in the axle. To use one of them just higher up seems like a good idea.

Just asking did your drive shaft have the locking collar at the PTO end. That collar locks the shaft forward with just a little slip for movement but holds it from ever falling out if the pin shears.

I would not pull on the cable to try and reverse the gears. If you have to spin the shaft then just use the pto or something on the pto shaft itself to spin it. Bust the gear and you will hate yourself and not proper way to get the drum to move.
