I was at work and I heard someone drive up in the CUCV M1028 we have been beating for 25 plus years. IMG_1671.jpeg I could hear it coming from a mile away. Anyway he shut it off and went and did some work. When it started it up and drove away I heard the strange sound the starter made engaging. I seen it parked at another location and decided to take a look see. IMG_1672.jpeg Problem number 1 3/8” starter bolts. Problem number 2 no support bracket. I spoke with the man that works on the vehicles and he basically blew me off and said it was good and that bracket was not needed. NAPA sent him the bolts and they were just a bit long so he used washers to make up for it. I thought about it and offered my help to deaf and ears. Next day zing zing. The starter is grinding and guess who found the broken bolt? I told them I have the remedy and can get you the right parts. Not listening again. More later. If anyone is looking to buy starter bolts I do strongly suggest the ARP option. OEM bolts are no longer available so you're banking on aftermarket. The ARP bolts are made from a stainless steel alloy from Carpenter called Custom 450. Stainless is usually a terrible choice for bolting, hopefully this introduces people to better bolting with stainless.

Listen up. OEM CUCV starter bolts may not be available but OEM GM 6.5 stater bolts and support bracket are still available. I have worked with vehicles all my life and I used a 1996 Chevrolet 6.5 turbo G3500 van as Model to get parts for the starter bolts, IMG_1686.jpegthis the support bracket bolt that threads into the block. This is the starter support bracket. IMG_1685.jpegIMG_1687.jpeg This shows the part numbers I used yesterday at the local Chevrolet dealer to obtain the bolts and parts. I bought 4 starter bolts the metric bolt that attaches the support bracket to the bolt and the bracket. $50. US. Have a good day. I still have the stock direct drive support brackets if you need one hit me up with a PM. Have a Great Day. I hope I helped out at least one person. I myself am going order a box of the OEM starter bolts. I have a picture of the new starter bolts also. I will post here.IMG_1688.jpeg

That wasn't the noise but it's good he found it. I thought the block bolt was 8 x 1.25 x1...I bought that 1009 running so we haven't touched the starter...yet.

I know a guy that has a ton of the oem starter bolts...you know one of those guys lol. I didn't know you can buy the bolt that goes in the block new still. Funny story as tonight my sons 1009 started making a tinny rattle noise. He poked under the truck and found the bracket there but no bolt in the block. That wasn't the noise but it's good he found it. I thought the block bolt was 8 x 1.25 x1...I bought that 1009 running so we haven't touched the starter...yet.

It absolutely does sound like a telephone bell ringing!! Bolt in the block missing...on the other blazer the bolt was loose...same noise.

Bell housing? I could swear the sound was coming from above the fuel tank, but I kept thinking it was the exhaust rattling against something.

If you have a south-facing gable on your barn, that'd be a great place to rack up some solar panels. They've never been cheaper. Believe it or not, I did look into the GM crate EV swap for the K5, but details were too thin and I felt like I'd get in over my head right quick.

Things didn’t work out very well for me and the EV. More later. Long story and I hope you have a deep wallet.
That could be a good thing for you not to purchase one now. The EV industry is evolving as we speak.
The future EVs will be way more affordable and get twice to three times the driving range with the new battery technologies their working on.
If you buy now you will be instantly behind the curve as far as resale value goes.

I was at the hardware store a while back and seen some fancy vice grips by Milwaukee. I looked them over and bought a pair. I have 50 pair of vise grips, but these had cushions on the handles, and I wanted to give them my endurance test. Well, here we are I used them 3 days and they are failures. The plastic handles slipped off and you can see where they were just glued on the steel. I used the nice tightening option with the eye bolt, and I think it just twisted the pivot points on the pliers. Now they are sloppy and loose. Massive fail. They have a picture of a Minion with eye protection, so I concluded they are made in China. I usually don’t care where things are made as long as they work. I have few Chinas wrench’s I have used and abused with heating bolts and holding the nuts with the cheap wrenches and they still work after 20 years of abuse. It saves my good Snap On and Mac from abuse. My advice stick to the old vise grips even they are made in China now that Erwin acquired the company years back, but they seem to hold up well. I go to a lot of yard/garage/estate sales. My first go to any sale it where the tools are. As such, I’ve become a bit of a tool nerd 🤓. Vise grips are on my list of must haves. By saying vise grips, I’m using the generic name based on the trade marked products. Anyway, all Chinese tools aren’t worth wasting your time unless you need a sacrificial pair for a project. They’re almost dirt cheap and there’s lots of them out there. Taiwanese pliers are a bit better. You can actually find a decent pair if you look long enough. But for the most part, they’re junk. Japanese made pliers are 50-50. I’ve got a pair that are as tough as they come. I’ve destroyed a couple as well. There’s not a lot of these pliers because IMHO the other oriental tools have overwhelmed the market. The absolute best are trademarked “Vise Grips”. I’ve got pairs the belonged to my Dad from 50+ years ago. I used them extensively while I was in the service. I beat the everluvin tar out of them trying to get a frozen part broke loose. I can attest that I only broke two pair but it took repeated hits from a heavy ball peen hammer to do them in. I’ve picked them up off the side of the road, junked cars/trucks, bottoms of ancient tool boxes etc. A good soak in a WD 40 type lubricant will do wonders. I’ve only found one pair that were totally beyond any level of repair. The PO of my XM-211 used a pair to attach a battery cable to the battery. It still held the cable in place. I smacked it one with a small hammer to pop it loose and it basically just fell to pieces.

I was at a friends place that deals in salvage vehicles and I spotted a Chevy Cruze that was wrecked. I thought it looked like a nice fuel economy car for me. I said I would give him $500. for that little car. He said you are pretty close. I drove away and thought about it and 2 weeks later I was back, and I said alright $600. He said close but not close enough. Anyway, it took $750. To take it home. It was very clean, and it was totaled because it was driven thru a chain link fence and had a $7K estimate and insurance totaled it. 1 owner never modified and never smoked in. It has 4 new tires, and I compounded the light road rash off it. The rest I am going to live with. It had a smashed hub cap. I cut it s bit and think I am onto something. The A pillar is the major damage and as long as a new windshield fits, I am golden with it. Take Care, Have Fun. Happy 4th of July. I am here in my barn yard playing and being creative. If I had a 10"-hole saw, I might be able to create the look with the hub caps. Looks Interceptor.
Ha Ha. For police on a tight budget.
