    Refreshing Gunny the thread.

I decided before I put the trans and transfer case back in the underside of the truck needed some love so I commenced with degreasing and painting the under side. Fortunately I live in the south so no worries about salt down here. This should last many years to come. I also installed that new...

    Refreshing Gunny the thread.

After I got done with the trans I remembered that the transfer case used to have a problem falling out of 4 high so I decided to go ahead and rebuild it as well with a new chain, bearings, and seals. Here is the completed transfer case. I think it cost about $250 with the new chain. and yes I...

    Refreshing Gunny the thread.

The first thing I had to do was get the transmission rebuilt. After attempting to call in some favors and all of them falling through I ordered a work bench how to on rebuilding a GM TH400 ordered the parts and few special tools I needed and set to work. This is the completed rebuild. all in I...

    Refreshing Gunny the thread.

This photo was taken in 2017, not to long after this the transmission went out on Gunny. Me not having the knowledge or the money to do anything to remedy the situation he got parked till late 2021 when I decided to just try to get him fired up and running again. After pulling glow plugs I put...

    Electrical issues

I would do a horrible job explaining it but this is an article on here for trouble shooting the circuit. https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/cucv-gen1-and-gen2-exciter-circuit-troubleshooting.121589/ If the front battery is draining and the rear is staying constant it could just be that the...

    Electrical issues

I would study the exciter circuit for the alternators before assuming both are bad. I had thought the same thing till I looked in to how that circuit runs thanks to some advice from the SS forum. Turned out the printed circuit board on the back of the instrument cluster was bad on mine causing...

My way to flush out M1009 CUCV brake system

Tools needed are wrenches a hand vacuum pump 5 bottles of 91% rubbing alcohol and a master cylinder bleed kit like this. I started by unhooking the two brake lines from the master cylinder. I used a hand vacuum like this to pull all fluid from the master cylinder. I filled the front and rear...

    M1009 Rear power 24v to 12v modification

Just did this mod on Gunny I plan on running a 1000watt inverter on the rear bus bar and had been trying to figure out the least invasive way to make the rear bus 12v. This is going to work great. Thanks for the write up.

    Electrical issue.

If it was in stock 24v configuration the only thing that should actually get 24v is the starter. 24v does go to the Volt meter but it has a resistor inline to make it 12v before it hits the meter it's a 12v meter with a resistor behind it. So if it's only getting 12v it's going to read no volts...

    Electrical issue.

It honestly looks like that has had a full 12v conversion. Without the glowplug resistor in it you may have sent 24v to 12v glow plugs when you put the batteries back in series. If you have 24v at the glow plugs you could have fried all your glow plugs. Also did you check the starter to see if...

    Electrical issue.

There's usually a large resistor on the firewall behind the aircleaner. Only picture I could find quick.

    Electrical issue.

Looks like the 24v to 12v resistor is missing off the firewall. Someone has either done or halfway done a 12v conversion

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Removed rusted out blower housing and replaced it with one bought off of CUCVRUS, cut out the rusty part of the firewall where the heater core had been leaking on it and welded in a 16 ga patch panel. Painted everything and installed a new heater core. Putting it all back together now. Looking...
