What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

A few projects from over the summer that I've been meaning to post. Pressure washed the frame and suspension as best as I could and hit all the small surface rust with a wire wheel. Primered and painted with Rust Oleum professional flat black through my HVLP gun. Removed all the rear shims...

    HMMWV Rock Sliders/ Rocker protection

I made mine from 1/4 inch 3x4 angle iron and 2 inch DOM tubing. I also deal with a lot of narrow trails and the side bars really do help. Trying to squeeze through a trail once I banged the front corner of them into a tree. Took a solid couple inch chunk out of the tree. I would hate to know...

    transmission swap questions

4l60 is the electronic version of the 700r4. If you are going electronic then you may as well get a 4l80. These engines don’t make much power but a 80 is basically the same price as a 60 used and no more headache to do. It is the modern 4 speed version of the turbo 400 that you have and what the...

    camber adjustment shims and plates

Yeah it looks like you had quite the headache trying go get yours to move. I didn’t think mine would be too bad since it’s never seen salt in it’s life. Had they put anti seize on them a decade or more ago it would probably be a non issue. Yeah that’s the cartoon. Not sure why it’s a half inch...

    camber adjustment shims and plates

I finally got it back together today. Camber looks spot on to me without any shims. There was tons of toe out at first after bolting it all back together. I probably said every cuss word in my vocabulary a dozen times while trying to get the radius arms to move. Finally got them to turn with a...

    camber adjustment shims and plates

I have jack stands under the center crossmember and got the wheels off. Undo the large bolts on the upper swing arm. Leave the nuts on and hit them with a hammer go get them freed some. I was able to lift up and down on the hub while jiggling the bolts and they came out. I decided to paint...

    camber adjustment shims and plates

I’m not sure how bad the coating on the bolts is but it’s not bad at all. I already had the tire off the truck to service the hubs but I got to the point pictured in about 40 minutes before it got dark by myself. This is laying on my back in my driveway and walking back and forth inside to grab...

    camber adjustment shims and plates

Got started on removing the rear shims today actually. Was surprised how clean they were along with the bolts. Must have been done during the 2014 overhaul. Same number of shims on both ends of the A arm. Therefore having both equal with no shims against the frame should be fine. At the end of...

front half shaft replacement before or after alignment?

I'd jump on that deal when I have the need for even 70% tread. It could be out of round of flat-spotted from sitting if it grabs on one side. I've gone over some pretty big rocks and logs off road, much bigger than any pothole I've seen at speeds faster than I probably should have been going...

front half shaft replacement before or after alignment?

About 30k now 27k 2.5 years ago when I got it. Not sure how much one shim will do to pull the tire in. I know it’s in the TM somewhere but 1/8 in right above the center is maybe 3/8 in at the top of the tire. The wear on your front tires could be from a toe issue as well but a shop can do that...

Rear body mount nut and bolt size?

I’m going to be doing this in the coming weeks so I went out and checked for you. It’s a 15/16 which I went out and bought when I installed my front winch. It’s a common size for a lot of the frame related bracketry on the truck. From what I’ve seen all the body and frame bolts are standard with...

front half shaft replacement before or after alignment?

You are correct you only have one plate on the rear without the slots to slide out. Mine has the plate and 2 shims in the rear for about 3/8 thickness. The front has a bunch for about 5/8. The frame on mine is cleaner than nearly any 89 civilian truck I’ve seen but some rust is starting to...

front half shaft replacement before or after alignment?

There is somewhere but the reality is that if this has ever come apart before I would bet whoever did it didn’t care enough to torque it to spec. I do torque my lugs on all my vehicles and lot of other things most people don’t bother with, **** even spark plugs, but I don’t think it’s a huge...

front half shaft replacement before or after alignment?

Dealing with this myself at the moment. All 4 tires are wearing uneven with the outside about 1/4” less tread in the rear and 1/8” less in the front. I can deal with the front and now that I’ve added the winch it’s probably close enough. While I’m in the middle of painting my frame I pulled the...

Power location for reverse camera and monitor

To be clear to the op what I said tapping the positive on the 24v positive will work fine if what you’re adding is 24v. I only mentioned the balancer because that is what my distro box is connected to. For your application it isn’t necessary unless you’re looking to add 12v accessories. As a...

Power location for reverse camera and monitor

I have my battery balancer and 12 volt fused distribution box in the unused compartment next to the batteries. There’s a few convenient large holes to run wires out and along the frame rail to wherever you’re looking to go. If you need power to the interior go out said hole and through the radio...

    Removing air from cooling system

When I did my coolant flush I simply topped off the expansion tank, heater valve fully open and started the truck until it was up to temp. Leave the cap off the tank and pump the throttle in neutral to speed / slow the water pump. This will help burp the bubbles. Top off the tank, replace cap...

What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

About a month ago I got stuck, and I really do mean stuck in some mud. Some a-hole that came by wanted $250 for 5 minutes of his time to pull me out. After telling him off and getting out,I decided it was time for a winch. If the hydraulic winches and military plates were still somewhat...

What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

Thanks for the positive feedback. I can make the ones pictured or variations like the 3/4 length ones I've seen before or also full length without the tubing. However, being in college full time I don't really have time to make any more until summer. I was looking to see if there was any real...

Problem installing spacer on with socket

Some spacers will require a thinner wall nut that usually resembles a locking lug. Or maybe try a standard chrome colored non impact socket if you haven't already. The manufacturers website should say if they need any kind of special nut.
