    Alaska to Alabama in Brutus

The engine will be fine with or without the FDC on any diesel. The fuels the engine was designed for are diesel, kerosene, jet fuels and mogas. Listed in order of energy density from highest to lowest, viscosity and density are roughly proportional to energy density. The FDC just lets more...

how hard do you drive it

Due to air conditioning, I have to keep it under 70 indicated when OAT is over 80F, otherwise it overheats slightly. Higher engine speed makes for more waste heat in IDI engines. Stock M1031 SECM with home made 24 volt AC compressor and front mounted condenser which probably chokes air flow...

    Trailer hitch

Too much bending stress on the bottom flange where you are welding. Better to put the stress in the stinger for any drop you need. What I did was weld via GTAW a 2" receiver to a plate replicating the bolt pattern of the pintle, then weld a gusset to the bottom of the receiver and a flange...

    Gama Goat Tours?

Seated in the back is uncomfortable at nearly any speed. Standing with bent knees is best. Get a Unimog for that task.

    Operating temp

WHAT? Thermostats are proportional devices, they moderate flow to maintain temperature. They are not Boolean devices, either open or closed but throttling devices, adjusting flow volume rate to keep temperature constant. Now, with that being said, low flow rate from the coolant pump (AKA...

F-16 pilot flies back to base with half a wing missing

Within reason, the Falcon can compensate through the flight control computer since it is a fly by wire system. But lose the computer and it is a tumbling brick. Which is why it has a hydrazine powered emergency power unit if the engine flames out or just quits.

I would very much prefer 12V to the 24V, Can it be switched?

If you still have two batteries, conversion is nil savings. Even if you want to run 12 volt items, keep it dual. For high power items like inverters, 24 V rules. Remember, twice the voltage means half the current which is half the copper.

    4L80E rebuild for my 1028A3

So you are marrying it to a NP208 transfer case? Is that why you need a short output shaft? I was under the impression on the 4L80 you could use a 2WD shaft trimmed down to fit, the transmission to transfer case adapter substitutes the tailcase housing on the transmission. I plan on putting a...

how hard do you drive it

Indicated 65 which is about 60 MPH true. Have topped out over 70 indicated. I really need a 4L80E swap.

    My first Generator MEP002A

Lost power Thursday night, wife didn't want to switch over to the 002A. Took the power company three hours to restore. I have to walk down to the shop, roll the generator up to the main panel and then transfer. Well, the shop is 100 yards away, two gates and two turns over hilly path. Even...

    CUCV as a Daily Driver?

We are down a car now after son #2 got his rear ended and totaled. So I drive my 1031 daily. It also helps that I do little jobs after work, mostly welding. All my gear plus power for the welder in the SECM. I drive the back roads when possible, 35 MPH is just fine. The air conditioning...

Dual circuit brake using pinion and wheel brakes.

The issue is twofold, mass and cooling. Take the six drums off a deuce/five ton etc and weigh them. That is how much mass you need in the pinion discs. Plus cooling which SHOULD be easier as the pinion is turning so fast. But as nearly all pinion discs are solid, not vented, they overheat...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

No, hat was a freebie given to me in exchange for frame work on a truck. To replace the Anchor brand vise that came with the truck. That I broke swapping out universal joints. The Anchor vise will get repaired, I just have to wait for a hole in work schedule. It is a generic Chinese...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Added a 10' drop of 12-4 SOOW wire from the 45 amp breaker on the 1031 SECM with a locking 1630 connector so I now have three phase power for my Miller Dynasty welder. I can weld 75 feet from the truck, very handy for my mobile welding business. I did some aluminum welding on a boat trailer...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Yes, that argon cylinder WAS SECURE. I use a ratcheting strap to secure it before removing the bonnet. That is outside of the picture, don't want this thread derailed by the safety fascists . On a side note, I made a twist lock pigtail off the 208 volt three phase on the M1031 SECM so...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

The break is WELDED ;). I like welding aluminum, it is quirky but rewarding. So getting off work at 1800, I run by home to make sure storms have not upset life, then tool over to MKCs and set up. More setup than prep. Weld time was nothing. Sure, the beads are big and bold. But penetration...

    MEP-802A and MEP-803A fuel consumption

Naturally. Otherwise you could turn a 100 kW generator with a 2 Hp engine. 2 Hp is equivalent to about 1.5 kW of electrical power. Heat is work is energy. Power is the rate of change of energy. 1 Hp is 550 foot-pounds per second. Or 746.xx Watts. And a Watt is 1 Newton-meter per second.

    another cucv electrical question

What is the actual voltage? The white tick on the green should be 28.8 volts. Green-yellow is 26 volts. When pre glow before starting, the indicator will be in the yellow, going to red during cranking.

What is this 14 volt alternator terminal for?

Probably field voltage off the regulator that goes to the brushes. See what it does when you put a load on the alternator, like turn the high beams on. If it increases, then it is field. I would NOT recommend putting any load on it as it would cause issues on stability of the 28 volt side.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Probably just need a little bake out of the cartridges. Acetone easily overloads cartridges as it evaporates FAST. Last year when we did our house floors, we sprayed a gallon of acetone stain in about 15 minutes. That is a fire hazard. No respirator would last any time. The floor finish...
