Does anyone know what the proper grease fittings are for most of the things on the LMTV (e.g. spring hangers, drag link, axles pivots, etc.)? I was going to order some online, so I don't have any to compare to before ordering. Thanks!
I had the fan clutch off when I did it, so I just used a crowbar between the fan clutch bolts to turn it. The manual says to turn the engine with the alternator pulley, which I've done too. Just put a big ratchet on the alternator pulley bolt, and as long as your belts are tight you can rotate...
Yeah, those are possibilities. I did have to adjust the throttle linkage quite a bit from where it was (moved the stop nuts ~3/4") before I could get it to contact both stop screws (relaxed, and gas pedal fully depressed) as the manual instructed.
LMTV definitely shows a noticeable improvement in pickup. It seems like the transmission is waiting a lot longer to shift up now though. I don't know how that is related to the engine swap, because we didn't really do anything to the transmission. For example, I think I use to be in 7th gear...
Just finished swapping out my engine, with the cracked block, on the M1078, with a 290HP replacement from an M1088. It took 2-5 of us 5 full days (~9AM-8PM), plus 4 days after work (~4:30PM-9PM). It took a lot of work, but we'll be ready for the 4th of July parade tomorrow!
It started right...
I would think that what changes when you turn on the high beam headlights is that you actually start putting a load on the alternator/voltage regulator. The high beams are probably the highest current drawing device in the truck.
Try this simple test. Start the truck, watch the bouncing...
Those that have my sway bar bushings... how are you liking them?
I've had a chance to reverse engineer a good upper cab bushing, and hope to make one of those in the next several weeks.
What is the proper orientation of the troop seat brackets that hold them in the up position, and the bungee? I can only seem to get them to slide between the rail and the upright seat in one orientation, but then the bungee is facing the outside? How do you get the bungee to hold the tube...
I called the Cat dealership, and it's not an engine part. Does anyone know anything about it that might help me track one down (military or civilian part? part number? etc.)?
I'm trying to get this engine swap done to be in the parade on the 4th, so I need to move quickly.
On the Cat 3116, there is an engine speed sensor (part 4) screwed into the driver's side of the bell housing (TM 9-2320-365-20-3, 7-38, Page 406). Two questions...
1.) Are replacements available? Is it a military or civilian part?
2.) What does it do? Is it only used for a tachometer...
I disagree. The reason the trucks aren't easier to tow is that the Army has little interest in flat-towing them, and has a boatload of privates just waiting to be ordered to do things that take way too much time. Basically, there just hasn't been a need to spend the money to equip the trucks...
Do you know if when these clutches are failing normally, do they fail and turn freely, or fail and hold indefinitely?
Is 1033-08250-01 Kysor - Style K22 Fan Clutch Lining Kit $64.27 the right thing?
Sorry that I didn't see this earlier. I was able to easily replace that inner (smaller) o-ring with a metric o-ring, on my M1078. I too had tried several of the english numbered o-rings, and none fit just right. I got a small metric o-ring kit and it had one that worked perfectly.
Hopefully...
By "short distance" are we talking a couple miles to the nearest shop, or is this meaning something like needing to tow it off the road into a parking lot 100' away?
The inspection port is documented in the 34-2 manual, under the engine replacement topic. It's a large (1.5"?) pipe plug on the upper passenger side of the bellhousing (about the 2 o'clock position, behind the exhaust pipe). The manual says to turn the crank by turning the alternator pulley...
Those driveshaft QDs are cool. They seem like a very simple design... I'm a mechanical engineer and once designed something similar to make QD mixing paddles for a candy mixing machine. Only having two small drive pins inside seems weak, but it looks like you could easily add many more, and/or...
I think my clutch is failed in the holding position. I can't get it to disengage, even when applying air pressure directly to the port. I had to pry in through the holes to get the bolts aligned, in order to remove it.
I just pulled my flexplate bolts yesterday. Half of them were loose, and the other half I was able to easily loosen with a standard length 3/8"-drive ratchet (8" long?).
